3 cylinder diesel freeze plug removal

Bought a freeze plug heater for my 1965 vintage 2000 3 cylinder diesel. How do I get the freeze plug out? It does not move when I beat on it. See pictures attached - this is on right side behind generator. Instructions from freeze plug heater say to hit one side with screw driver to push it in then grab with pliers on other side and pull it out.

That is a threaded plug. Don't try to beat it out. If you crack the casting you're screwed.

Which also means your new heater probably won't fit.

Being threaded, it's also not a freeze plug.

yep.. it's a casting core plug.

and as mentioned the early ones were threaded. I know 4-68 was a cutoff for many early options including tin louvers..e tc..

OK, well I suspected something was not right. My owners manual shows an optional coolant heater in that plug location - maybe that is only for later years. Don't think I have damaged it but will find out when I put the coolant back in and get it up to operating temperature. What kind of tool does it take to remove the screw in core plug?

A large nut of that size is usually twice as thick as that is deep which would leave enough exposed to use a wrench or socket on. Hopefully.

Also, look at the bottom of this page/link. Seems to be the heater you'll need.

I see what you are saying. It is a 1 inch hexagon opening so I can put a 1 inch nut in it and use a 1 inch socket to remove the plug. Good thinking - did not occur to me. Thanks for the link to the core plug heater. Looks like what I will need. I also bought a lower radiator hose heater in case I could not get the freeze plug out. I may just give that a try first.

otherwise, a large hex key or HK socket set.. etc.

I personally hate inverted head plugs..
