I purchased a JD455. Have not gotten a manual as yet. TO check the hydro fluid do you screw the dipstick in or not to check level?

I have a JD455 per manual do not screw down dipstick. Check cold. Use Deere Hy-Gard J20D fluid not type F ATF.

The PTO clutch is hydraulic wet disk bath & Hy-Gard has anti chatter properties.

Happy mowing /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the info. Saw this '98 455 at my dealer and it was very clean and had 240 hours. It came with a MC519 powerflo collection system. Sure does a nice job mowing. I had a 445 awhile back but traded it on a JD4410 but then decided I needed something smaller for mowing around the house. The 455 sure uses a lot less fuel then the 445.

Know what you mean - we had a JD140 here since 1970. Took 4 hours & 1 3/4 gals fuel every weekend. I bought this '99 455 off ebay in '02 with 19 hours on it. After mowing today 1st time out this season it is showing 99.8 hours. Mowing takes 1.5 hours. Definitely improved my free time /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a 445 with 250 hours on it. I never paid much attention to how much fuel it used until..... I decided to add to the "fleet" /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I purchased a 757 ZTR /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here are the difficult to comprehend (at least for me) stats on the two mowers and fuel use /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

445 22 HP (F.I.) 54 MMM uses about 1.2 gal. fuel

757 25 HP 60 MMM uses about 1.9 gal. fuel

Both are cutting just under 2 acres of turf. Both do the job within 15 minutes of each other, about 1 1/2 hours including time around trees, etc.

My first thoughts were; larger mower deck, faster machine, less time, less fuel /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Well, it didn't work out that way /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif But, the ZTR sure is fun to use /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had intended to check my 455 efficiency but it uses so little it's not worth the bother. I fill it up from bulk tank in June and again in Sept or Oct /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
