Good luck with your fence. Sounds like you are going to the trouble of doing it right. Well put up fence is a lot of work but if done right it is well worth the effort.

Another update... We only managed to do 5 posts and holes on Thursday - but we learned a lot (mostly by NOT repeating our mistakes). By this morning we felt we had the "technique" down and promptly set 12 posts in newly drilled holes in just under 4 hours. Still have a long way to go, but we've got two sides done now. Well - except for the corners, we'll do those last.

Also picked up a set of QA Pallet Forks to make moving the "logs" a bit easier...

If you have the time I would enjoy some more photos of your fencing project.

Thanks for posting. Looks like some tall fence and tall posts. How tall are they?

Posts are 12 foot tall. They're 6" in diameter at the top and around 9" at the bottom. Of course some are larger (and heavier) than others. There are also some rather interesting curves in the wood! :confused2: On a few of the posts we had to spin them around to find something akin to a straight side we could attach the wire to...

A 12' tall post would be a handful to drop in a post hole. Setting 12 posts in under 4 hours sounds like a pretty rapid pace to me.

We tried several ways of speeding up the process. Along the way we discovered we could NOT drill more than 3 holes before we dropped the posts as the dirt from the hole began to firm up (kinda turned to hard pack). As long as we drilled 3 and dropped we were good to go - but if we went 5 holes before tramping in the posts it actually slowed us down. Also helped to push the flags down to the ground along the line so we could drive over them to the next one (we used little marker flags like the ones the phone company uses to mark underground lines). We also discovered that loading more than 3 posts on the pallet forks proved unwieldy. With only 3 posts on the forks I could drop one off the end by tilting without much issue - but with five on it seemed I always had 2 roll off. The trick of course is to roll them off right at the hole so all you have to do is stand them up and they slide right in place. Which - as you can imagine - is easier said than done, but for the most part I got pretty good at it by the end of the day...

When I got the hang of it it was quicker for me to drill all the holes and then set all the posts. A lot less climbing on to and off of the tractor. Sounds like you don't have this option. This is a good thread and I am enjoying your posts. Much more enjoyable to watch others do this after my fence is done. It would be interesting to see photos of the stretching of fence that is this tall. That's going to be handful.

Hey Keith I did the same thing as you last year. Buried auger. Hooked chain from bucket on other tractor and applied some upward pressure. Worked good. Someone on TBN advised not to turn auger too slow and I believe he was right. Good luck with your fence.
