We are looking at buying our first tractor, with the main use to be moving/unloading large square bales of hay. We are looking for a tractor with a cab, in the approx 75-90HP range, with a loader lifting capacity of >1400kgs and/or >3.5m height in order to unload bales stacked on a semi trailer, either two at a time or one at a time with a higher reach. So far we've looked at the MF4609, Case JX70, NHT4.75, NHTD5.75, Kubota M8540, but with no real experience to draw on, we are looking for any advice from users of these tractors. Also interested to hear comments on wet vs dry clutch, while keeping in mind that we won't do a huge number of hours in the tractor and looking for value for money for our use. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The case and nh 4.75 are smaller framed tractors than the others so a bit of a different class. Consider wheel base, track width, and overall weight. Also, there may be differences on the loaders for the various models mentioned. Not just in lift capacity, but reach forward which can be helpful in unloading trailers are stacking.

I can tell you that the JX70 is a basic FARM tractor with basic features, meaning it doesn't have a lot of hi-tech "things" that may, or may not, be a problem as the tractor ages.

It is a good solid tractor with no frills, and that's what keeps the price on them down.

I've put a lot of hours on a JX65 and a JX95, so I do have enough seat time in them to be able to make the above statement.

There's nothing wrong with a dry clutch, IF you aren't one of those people that choose too high a gear and sllliiiiip the clutch all the time!

IF you are going to be doing much loader work, get the MFWD! (4wd)

Personally, I'd be looking at the JX95 instead of the smaller model! I think the 70 is too small...

Thanks for the responses. After talking some more today, we are leaning now towards the Case Farmall 75C as we have been given an excellent price by the local dealer here. If it's truly the same tractor as the New Holland Powerstar T4.75, why is it so much cheaper?!

That's fine, BUT will the loader on that tractor safely pick up and handle 3,000 + pound bales??

It's rated for 1475kgs (3245 pounds), so should be ok?

Blue has always been alittle more then red around here, but then it also depends on the dealer. The nh dealer closest to me is about 6-8k higher on a t4.75 then the dealer two hours away.

It may be rated for 3245 lbs. but if you are planning on moving 3000 lb. bales at a brisk rate you should be looking for a tractor that has more capability so you don't have to crawl along.

The weight of your fork attacment needs to be subtracted from that...400 to 600lbs....and the fact that the load is not back at the pins...Do the bales way 3000 lbs ???

Here is a link to the loader specs on the Kioti PX90 tractor..Might be better off with something like that.KL9;) | Kioti Tractors
