    The answer to all your questions is yes.

    Everything you described sounds perfectly normal.

    The PTO lever has a significant amount of pressure on it and there is no way to feather that clutch. Yes it really slams forward.

    The PTO clutch is just like any other clutch. The free play is set when the clutch is engaged. With the clutch disengaged, there is no free play in the lever.

    One thing that the manual does not mention is how to engage the PTO clutch. To maximize PTO clutch life, engage the PTO when the engine is at an idle or slightly above.
