Ford 1600
I just bought a Ford 1600 with an ARPS 728 backhoe. The BH service manual called for 10W40 oil to be used in the reservoir.

Do they make 10W40 hydraulic fluid or are they calling for regular 10W40 motor oil?

Thanks for the help.

I believe they are talking about regular motor oil. My Power-Trac uses the same oil in the hydraulic system, and so do many industrial machines.

You can call the Ford tractor place and ask to be sure.

Does your back hoe have it's own reservoir, and pump.

If it is connected to the tractor hydraulics, it would probably work.

Regular Motor oil.
Interestingly the owners / operators manual for my Komatsu Bull Dozer calls for 10W40 motor oil in the hydraulics . I did not believe it so I called Komatsu and sure enough they in fact use 10W40. I needed to replace the fluid anyway, so I drained it and filled it with UTF from Sam's club  Two years later..... no problems (knock on wood). In fact I use UTF R&O 46 fluid in the hydraulics of my other two tractors, one a Chinese Jinma, the other a 1953 Ford Golden Jubilee with a Bradco BH. They seem to be doing just fine. I guess the point being it probably really doesn't matter. Some can be passionate about what oil to use where, and in many cases I suppose it really does matter. However when it comes to tractor / BH hydraulic systems, they seem to be pretty forgiving. Most all Tractors, dozer's, Hoe's etc use a gear pump, valves to control fluid, rubber / steel hose to carry fluid, and cylinders with seals to do the work. Just make sure the fluid is appropriate for the seasonal operating temperature.

My Case 1845 uses 10W-40 with an additive pkg supplied by Case.

Power-Trac's answer to using motor oil as the hydraulic fluid, was that it was more readily available . Some of the guys have used synthetic.

Engine Oil...Yes, BUT, NON-Detergent Only...Not your run of the mill off the shelf Wally World special....

Hydraulic System Oil Recommendations

You should know that all multi-weight oil is detergent oil, and has some benefits. You have to use multi weight oil to account for the temperatures where you live. Here in Florida, I could probably get away with 30W non detergent oil. In cold climates, the fluid has to be able to flow. One good thing about non-detergent oils, is that when you get water in your system, it settles to the bottom of the unit and can be drained off. Water is one of the largest problems with hydraulic system, and if left in the system, acids start to form and other things start to happen.

Some of the manufacturers even recommend the multi grade motor oils in their systems, like Larry said. I guess the viscosity is just about right for our systems, the Power-Trac, as it has been used for a good while now. My PT-1445 has a 20 gal reservoir.

I take care of a mowing companies ZTR's and they are hydraulic drive and hydraulic deck. As a matter of fact, all the engine does is turn a large hydraulic pump. Everything is ran via hydraulics. The system calls for 5W30 Mobil 1 Synthetic and in a pinch it says the only thing to substitute it with is 5W30 Castrol Full Synthetic.
