| David Brown Backhoe rams A mate has a DB backhoe model ADD/1 and the slew rams leak while under load.
At the moment we've not had much luck locating spare seals. So the plan is to stip down the ram and go to a hydraulic shop and try and match up the seals.
Question. How do the rams come apart?
Thanks. |

| Re: David Brown Backhoe rams Welcome to TBN
There are MANY different ways cylinders are held together-from threaded end caps, wire retainers, to snap rings. If you post a couple pictures of the cylinders we can talk you through it.

| Re: David Brown Backhoe rams Although I'm not familar with your David Bradly,
it appears your cylinders gland nut, is retained with a snap ring. at least by the pictures it looks that way.--
when you get them apart, most packing/scrapers, "O" rings etc. are available
We have a place in the states that supply world wide:
Martin fluid power--- Martin Fluid Power - A worldwide distributor of seals, packing, gaskets, and seal repair kits since 1977
I was able to get everything I needed to repair my 45 year old Wainroy backhoe.
They had all the rod scrapers, v packings & "O" rings I needed for all the
cylinders on the back hoe. their entire catalog is on line.
Their prices were extreamly reasonable. I also talked to them on the telephone and they were most helpful.!!
Good luck!
Please let us know how you are progressing as it helps others.

With the snap ring removed, how does it come apart? |

| Re: David Brown Backhoe rams The part where the rod slides in/out of the cylinder,-----
is called the gland. --- if it is threaded into OR onto the cylinder, it is called a gland nut.
It will be leaking between the rod & the gland or between the gland & the cylinder (or both)
Yours looks to be held in the cylinder with a snap ring (your pictures are not too clear on my computer)
If this is correct, by removing the snap ring, the seals/piston/rod assembly will come out of the cylinder together. And you can replace the worn parts.
Usually if they are threaded into or onto the cylinder, they will have a hex of some sort to grip with a wrench to unscrew it; or some drilled holes to insert a spanner wrench, but I don't see that in your pictures.
If you see a snap ring holding the gland in the end of the cylinder that is what you want to remove.
Sometimes they are a real chore to remove, as they are quite sturdy.
When you get the snap ring out, you will have to pull pretty hard to remove the Gland & piston/rod assembly,--you can apply air pressure to the fitting where the hydraulic hose attaches, allowing you to "blow them out"
CAUTION!! Be careful if you use air pressure, as it will come out with a quick motion and splash you with hydraulic oil, stand to the side if possible. Best to do this on a clean/concrete floor. Been there, done that.
a gland nut is like a screw on lid, on a jar of pickles,
it can have the threads on the inside or the outside to hold it on the cylinder.
----A gland is like a cork in a wine bottle only held in with a snap ring.
I hope this helps |

| Re: David Brown Backhoe rams Hi Will,
I don't,
That being said the last pix across the top, #4 at the bottom, there looks to be something resembling a angle cut snap or retaining ring, not the type with a hole.
but ain't clear
looking at the recess angle cut in the gland, there might be the hidden type in there and the cut allows access to it.
I have seen that type and they are a bear to get out.
I'm thinking why else would there be a cut in the gland if not to remove the retaining ring?
they are not welded throwaways, or through bolt & don't looked threaded, so they gotta be retaining ring-- I mean what else is there?
The guy is across the world and I am trying to help.
