Hello Everybody-

Just coming in for the day and the '85 Case 585 with 4750 hours just started having some issues. We haven't had a chance to do any real diagnostics, but any thoughts folks might have about the symptoms and possible diagnosis would be a big help for tomorrow.

Scenario:

The Case ran real good this morning, we were using an auger to put some posts in, ran about 4 hours straight with no issues (other than breaking our last shear bolts for the auger). Parked her, shut her off, went in for lunch and then an impromptu run to the parts store to pick up some shear bolts , came back out started her up later ~2 hours of downtime and BAM no power steering, bucket lifting very slowly and the transmission was slow/reluctant to engage. We ran her for a good 1/2 hour trying to get her to warm up, it was about 28 degrees out today--thinking that the hydraulic fluid was just gummed up a bit, but no change in how it operated.

We brought her back to the shop parked her and did several checks (one even according to the manual) of the tranny oil and the transmission/hydraulic fluid level came up perfect each time. Some small drips from the under the tractor which are hydraulic fluid, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Any thoughts out there from folks?!?!

Any suggestions, thoughts, insights, etc would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

-FourStop

New update:

We fired her up this morning and had the same issues as the previous day: No power steering, bucket raising slowly, tough to engage transmission, but the three point hitch was working fine--probably a valve problem Any suggestions for diagnosing where the issue is?

We had a loader tractor act very similar this week and found water in the oil. (tractor sets out in the weather all the time) We changed the oil with fresh and all is well. If your oil is not milky looking, this is probably not your problem. Ken Sweet

Hi Ken-

So, drained the oil and all the oil looked fine--no water in it.

Thanks,

Update:

Since then, we've checked the fluid levels-perfectly fine. We thought the Multiple Control Valve spool was at issue-- it was jammed up a bit, and apparently it's a problem historically with the 585/685 Cases' according to the Case service department. But we managed to get the spool loose and it is now sliding freely. We drained the fluid and changed the hydraulic filter.

So this is where we're at now. Since we re-added the same used (practically brand new, less than 10 hours on it) hydraulic fluid, we can't get the bucket to lift, the three point hitch to lift (new problem, it worked before), or the power steering to engage after running her for about 10 minutes and doing what the manual says to bleed the air from the lines (moving controls for the bucket up and down / moving steering wheel).

Any ideas on what's wrong, or what to try next?!?!?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

-Ryan

Some tractors have oil reservoirs in common with 1 filling point, however, there may be a raised partition where the castings are bolted together. We always drive a tractor up and down a incline to make sure the oil gets in all the reservoirs. Ken Sweet

Do you have more then 1 filter? Hydrostat appears at a quick glance to be with steering. TractorData.com CaseIH 585 tractor information May have a charge pump for this. After checking for another filter or strainer, I think the next step is to see in a manual what pressures need to be, and points to check it at and or flow tests.
Possibly a priority valve in the steering circuit also, may have debris in it.

O.K. I see no flow. Is pump crank mount, or internal?
If pump is above reservoir you now may have lost prime, or if a charge pump is involved that is possibly suspect to not giving flow.

Hi Folks-

Thanks for the suggestions--the last issue (none of the hydraulics working) was indeed a priming issue. We let it sit for a while, then jacked up the front end, to get the wheels up and off the ground, and then we were able to move the wheels without any resistance and the prime came right back. One suggestion I heard trying to figure this out was to get a male-male hydraulic hose and hook the rear remotes together to get the flow going. Didn't have to do that to get prime back, but figured I'd pass it on.

So now the bucket works (slowly), the three point hitch works, BUT the power steering can't get the wheels to turn.

When we use the bucket to raise the front end off the ground, the wheels will turn very easily. When we put the wheels back on the ground, we can't get the wheels to turn no matter how we turn the wheel. Any ideas about what this is?!

Could this be indicative of a worn hydraulic pump? It doesn't have the power to raise the bucket quickly anymore, and it can't turn the power steering, but the three point linkage is light so it raises it no problem?

Thanks for any ideas people might have to share.

I do believe you need to put a flow meter and gage in the system and do some logical trouble shooting. Install the setup before the first valve. First thing to check would be the pump, by closing down the needle valve.

If any of the relief are actuating, then you can assume the pump is good.

Two good reasons for no prime. low fluid, and suction hose air leak.
