case 5240 reverse/shuttle problem

reverse and sometimes all forward gears wont engage sometimes dont know where problem is or where to begin is it a solenoid,sticky valve ,electrical problem or what.When it works there is no problem.Dont have manuals or where to find scematics for hydralics or wiring .

You will need manuals and a few gauges to get to the bottom of this. There are several posibilities that it could be. Does it change with the use of the clutch petal or do you need to shut it off?

ty for reply Art.first time happened tractor was warmed up lost reverse then lost fwd gears .Fwd gears came back after much fiddling around dont know if clutching or playing with connections did it however did not turn off.Next day fired it up to try and fix and all was well until tractor got warm again then lost just reverse .loaded a trailer with hay without reverse turned off for two hours started up and had nothing and couldnt get it too go at all.tractor has sat now 2 miles from home waiting for fix will try and get manuals tday.reverse indicator light doesnt work properly when this is happening.
