case 580d
I have a case that would not steer. We put a new hand pump on it.It still will not steer and now the hydraulic fluid does not seem to be bleeding the air out.We took about 10 gallon out and only put about 6 back in and the tank is completely full.I have been told 3 things.Filter collapse, relief valve or unloader valve. The bucket and back hydraulics work perfect.

There is something wrong with the figures. If the system held 10 gal before, then it should hold the same amount of fluid, unless all the cyl and hoses were void of fluid. If you are getting air in the hyd system, there is a problem. If you have a suction leak, you could suck in air and things will feel mushy.

There may be a priority circuit which routes a certain amount of fluid to the steering. If you crack a fitting, does air or fluid come out of the steering circuit?

The hydraulic pump on the 580D is divided into two sections with a common inlet.
One section works the steering, the other section works the loader and backhoe functions.

(See attached diagram)

The steering system also has a relief valve in the circuit. If the relief is bad, you may not be getting pressure to the orbitrol steering motor. A bad pump could also cause low flow and/or low pressure to the steering motor.

A gauge on the main pressure line from the pump to the relief or from the relief to the steering motor would tell you what your steering pressure is so you can compare it to the specs.

Check the steering pressure and we can maybe offer more advice.

Hope this helps.
