Ummm.... To operate the hydraulic pistons.... extend and retract the arm and curl the bucket.

All the motor does is run the hydraulic pumps. The hydraulics do all the actual work and movements.

Surely you jest.

But in case you don't know, it is the fluid used in hydraulic systems to operate the cyl, motors, in a hydraulic system.

The flow of the hydraulic fluid is accomplished by a hydraulic pump, and hydraulic valves direct the fluid to certain places to operate the hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors.

A gas or diesel engine will power the hydraulic pump.

Perhaps he meant to ask what hydraulic fluid is used in excavators? That would make more sense to me. The OP needs to clarify, please.

I think Jinman hit it on the head. Maybe the persons english is a second language? If that was the question, what kind of hydrulic fluid should an excavator use? The answer would be what the machine specs in the owners manual. If you don't have the owners manual, I would think any standard hydrualic fluid would work.

At least they didn't call it hydrolic oil. That comes in a wheel barrel.

oil is used for hydraulics since it doesnt compress like air or water does.

Water is just as incompressible as oil. But, water does not lubricate and causes rust.
