2 quick hydraulic questions,

#1 does a hyd. cylinder have more power extending, retracting or sre they equal?

#2 when using a needle valve to slow down the action do I need one on each line or will one control both directions?

Thanks

#1: Single rod cylinders will have more force extending than retracting.

#2: Depends on how the cylinder the cylinder is mounted and where you install the needle valve.

2a) cylinder mounted rod end up end extends to lift the load a needle valve in the cap end would control speed in both directions.

2b) Cylinder mounted rod down with load hanging on the rod and needle valve installed in the cap end. Load would freefall down and have controlled speed on retract.

NOTE: Use caution when installing needle in the rod end due to pressure intensification across a cylinder.

cylinder will be horizontal.

Are you talking about a setup like a log splitter? What are you trying to accomplish?

As long as you do not have a one way control needle valve which is very common (body where fittings are screwed in are not equal on each side of the valve) Equal distances are a needle valve that controls fluid in both directions. It is better (have better control) to have the control valve on the cylinder end , not the rod end of the cylinder.

As was already asked, what are you trying to control? :confused3:

Using on a grapple to control speed of arm. I will try to get model # of valve.
Thanks

Grapple cylinder will have an over hanging load even with the cylinder being horizontal. You will have to look at the mechanical connections and determine how much over hanging load there is. Suspect you will need to install the needle valve in the rod end to prevent the cylinder from extending and the grapple from free falling.

A couple of pictures showing the cylinder and how it is mounted would be worth at least a 1000 words..
