Hydraulic problems that we need help with!!

Hello, Can someone please help us figure out what to do. We have a JD 2940. It started out with water in the hydraulic fluid so changed it and then it kept happening and Hubby changed it several times. Then the next thing that happened is that the hydrostatic steering filter kept blowing out. So he replaced it a couple of times. Now the whole system has quit front loader, back loader, power stiring...it is a big mess ;o(. We would like to try and trouble shoot it ourselves as at this time taking to the repair shop is not an option. Thanks in advance for any help you all can give me to pass on to hubby. He has replaced some lines, checked the screen and cleaned it.

Your tractor is a closed center hyd system,

JD2940

Hydraulics:
Type: closed center
Valves: 1
Pump flow: 18 gpm [68.1 lpm]


Make sure all filters are serviceable and clean.

Fill all fluids to correct levels.

Make sure all levers are in neutral.

If you have a hyd gage, install it in the IN port of the loader.

Start tractor and activate the loader lever and hold it until the loader raises, and if it is jerky, raise and lower many times to purge the air.

Do the same with all valves to purge air from each circuit.

If the hyd system has lost the prime, you will have to help the fluid by using a small amount of air pressure in the filler cap.

You could momentary remove the IN port hose to the loader and place in a bucket and see if the pump is pumping.

Sunset,
your 2940 has a pressure compensated radial piston pump. If the control is stuck or plugged it will not produce any pressure. Since you say the system was full of water I would be concerned about rust. Rust particles can plug control orifices and other small passages.

Saying it blew the steering filter apart twice it sounds like your system is building up excessive pressure in that line. Your tractor may have a priority flow control valve to ensure that the steering and brakes always works before any other hydraulic function. Typically this priority valve also has a pressure reducing function to limit the pressure to the steering and brake circuit. If this valve is stuck from contamination like rust or sludge it could provide excess flow and or pressure to the steering circuit causing the filter to fail and also could cause all functions to fail or operate very slowly.

What you described is pretty well what is going on with the hyd. Can't afford a mechanic right now, is there anything you could suggest to find and hopefully fix the problem? thanks, Dean

The front-end loader has been jerky before, but now I'm lucky if it raises at all, would air in the system cause it to totally fail, including the steering? thanks, Dean

Check fluid level.

Clean all screens and filters.

If you have air in the hyd system, you may have a suction leak. Fix that first.

Air in a hyd system will normally purge it self with use.

Re-check all your QD's.
