JD 3020
I have a JD 3020 according to the chassis number it is a 656800 so I assume a 1965 model, Row Crop, Diesel, Syncro Range Trans.
Here is my problem while using the brake pedal locked up not sure if it was in the up position or down brakes did work prior. I did try to bleed and got signs of water in hydro oil. So I changed the oil and the filter, 1 large drain plug close to the back and a small plug that was more up front. Put in new filter and oil although I did not use the JD brand special oil the owners manual suggested but a compatible from a local farm store. When this and a couple of other maintenance projects were complete I started the tractor and ( the hydraulics were always a little slow starting, take a few minutes for the steering, 3 point lift, and loader to activate but they did start working. So far so good. I let run for a few more minutes since I had changed the hydro oil and also engine oil.
Here is what I have now, the brake pedal is still locked wont move up or down also the transmission will not engage on the left side of the shifter panel but will engage an move the tractor on the right side of shifter panel which includes 3 and R and 5 and R. Any ideas would be appreciated. Also I need to mow would I be safe to use the 3 or 5 which are what I generally use anyway or will it burn something up. And it would really be great to get the brakes working.
Oh and once while pulling someone out of the snow it seemed like one wheel wanted to lock up. What about the differential lock pedal? If it was to get pushed could this be my brake issue?

Diff lock valve is independent of brakes except for a diff lock release linkage attached to brake pedals. Brake valve sounds as if brake valve pistons are sticking which requires a kit and some cleaning. On trans sounds as if shifter or linkage rods needs adjustment or possible shimming. Latch(parts key 5) has a history of wearing therefore not holding one of the shifting drums in correct location.plus wear causes slack between drums requiring more shims(parts key 17)

Thanks again sorry for the double posting was not sure where it should go. I will check into the brake valve pistons, it's odd seems like the pedals are just stuck in the middle, cannot push them down or pull them up. On the transmission everything worked fine until I changed the oil but the dip stick shows full and the right side of the shifter mech works ok, just not the left. Thanks again and I will explore your suggestions.

Lubricate the pin that brake pedals pivot on.

Tx Jim I do not find a grease fitting for the brake pedals. Also I was incorrect in the location of the pedal. They are in the all the way up position. I am going to work on the pistons as suggested but have lots to remove to get there. JD hides things well and old tractors have things like rounded and striped nut's and bolts. The only way I can see to get to them (pistion's) is to remove the platform. Somebody did not do a very good job last time. Currious do you think I would be ok to go ahead and use the tractor in gear 3 or 5 on the right side of the shifter? Linkage is well hidden also. I can get by with no brakes as I wont be leaving the field. Thanks

Lubricate doesn't indicate grease fitting. There are lubricants named PBblaser,Kroil, plain old oil plus others. You can operate tractor in the gears you inquired about with no problems as long as you're not grinding on gears.

On the shifting problem, Do you have any other gears? I am guessing you may have 7th and 8th. On the gears you don't have, will the shifter move into those positions and tractor won't move? Does it make any noise when you attempt to move in those gears? On the brakes, you will probably want to remove the entire brake valve. Remove the right side battery box, remove 4 oil lines attached to the valve, remove the linkage from the diff lock valve and remove two bolts holding the valve on. then you can disassemble the valve on the bench.
