Tractor
1992 case 235
my tractor , a smallholder st2030 (rebadged yagmur), has developed a fault the wheels turn in the correct direction each time the wheel is turned but i dont get a lock ie the wheel will continue to turn, if i don't turn the wheel constantly then the front wheels do there own thing and follow camber, any ideas and will it need specialist help or do you think it could be done by a amateur diyer.
any help or advice appreciated

Air in the system is probably not your problem. If you can get the cylinder to full stroke in one direction and continue to turn the wheel in that direction, you most likely have piston seals leaking in the cylinder.

Doesn't steering with hydraulic cylinder also have mechanical linkage? If the steering turns there is something broken in the mechanical part. In example the bolt or key in steering shaft coupling to the steering box is broken/sheared/ missing. Or the key in the arm that the pushrod is connected to is sheared. Isn't steering wheel slipping on the steering shaft? If all those things are good then the problem is internal to steering box.

I was thinking either bad seals in the steering cylinder or the steering wheel itself is loose on the column shaft. Id check for a loose steering wheel first. Then for seals in the steering cylinder. Then have the steering valve tested.
