After my other wood splitter was stolen I need to build another one. To save expense I could use duel cylinders. I'd need a 5" single cylinder or duel 3.5s to nearly match it. Duel 4"s would exceed a 5" by 7 tons at 2700 psi. If I used duel cylinders could I put one on "float" and only pump fluid to one to provide faster cycle times except when I need the extra power. I plan to power this with an 18 hp Briggs&Stratton Vanguard donated from a Cub cadet lawn mower. What pump would be a good match?

High performance log splitting. This should be good.

Something like this one. 4.5in bore, 30 in stroke, 2.5 in rod, 33 and 42 gpm double pump set up as a high low to act like a two stage pump.
