Did you let the tractor sit before checking the level? My JD only has a sight glass, not a dipstick but the instructions are very clear to let it sit for hours (preferably overnight) before adding fluid. They mean it. After use, I never see fluid in the sight glass, but the next morning it's back at the correct level.
