Tractor
John Deere 4200
Ok I have read most of the posts here and can't pinpoint my issue. Tractor movement works, pto works, bucket does not and power steering does not. I am assuming Kenny will respond to this being he is known here as the hydraulic god. :D From what I have found is the steering pump is separate which confuses me why two pumps are not working. And there must be a third pump since the tractor will move. I do here a pump "noise" tho. I have heard the similar noise out of a failing power steering pump on a car. I am a lamen when it comes to tractor terms so please don't use slang or abbreviations. I don't even know where these pumps are located and/or how many i even have on this tractor. Thanks in advance for anyones help.

Just a silly question but have you checked your fluid levels?

Yes. It was two gallons low from the seven gallons it requires. Worried I fried a pump. It is up to proper level now.

Ha I'm flattered :)

Yes there are two pumps, one for the implements and one for the power steering, the steering pump also supplies charge pressure to the hyrdostat so it's odd that the tractor moves OK, but the steering does not work.

I would check two things first:
1) Do a simple pressure test, make (or buy from us) a test gauge, that will help tell whats happening. We have a video on the website and YouTube showing how to do this simle test.

2) Check, or better yet just replace the rubber "hose" AKA "manifold" (#2 below) between the main pickup line and the pumps, these are known to crack and cause the system to suck air. Anyone with a 4x00 series machine should be checking/replacing these after all these years, its cheap insurance that can save the pump for only $20 or so.

Thanks for responding. I will replace the manifold and do some pressure testing. You say this has two pumps. The one this manifold is hooked up to... is that the pump for the loader or is that the pump for the power steering and hydrostatic drive? Any idea where I can get a service manual for this tractor? I see a few online i can buy but not sure if they are decent and will show me what i need to know. Not interested in pictures of the steering wheel and explanations what is used for. lol. I want hydraulic schematics and technical stuff.

I can't get to jdparts now...but the pumps are mounted in tandem (back-to-back) so it's not easy to see both.
Tech manuals are available from your dealer, or GreenFarmParts online. I can help out later with some links...

Thanks. I saw somewhere someone said its costly to replace the pumps if they are fried. I found pumps online and they don't seem to expensive and if they are exposed and not internal isnt it just an unbolt and bolt on new? Also, took off manifold and inspected and cleaned. Looks fine but I will replace once I solve problem. But, after starting again, forward and reverse motion struggles but I also noticed that the manifold collapses. Pretty sure that is not normal operation for it. lol Thinking about pulling of screen under *** end of tractor where the tube from the manifold connects into (assuming that is location of screen) and cleaning. Really appreciate your help. :)

Skip,
If the manifold is collapsing, you have a blockage on the return side-I'd get that pickup screen out ASAP, you'll have to dump all the fluid to do that. I assume you have the owners manual?

When was this last serviced? Including pickup screen cleaning and changing the fluid and main filter?
Fluid clean and clear? Or foamy/milky looking? Not it's possible for the fluid to grow an algae that can really gum up the works.

Here is the screen, #4:

Any chance someone opened or closed the valve behind your left foot when sitting on the tractor?

Any chance someone opened or closed the valve behind your left foot when sitting on the tractor?

What valve is that on a JD 4200? Are you thinking of the rate of drop valve for the 3PH? If so how would that affect the entire system?
