Tractor
Bolens G174
Last year I rolled on the side with my Bolens/Iseki KE75 tractor. I put key and throttle arm in ''off'' position but engine continued to run and even ran at full blast for about 10 long minutes. I don't know what it was using as fuel since both ignition and throttle were shut off. When it stopped, I turned tractor back on its 4 wheels and let it cool off. A few hours later it started ok but it was noisy and black smoke was comming out of muffler. I changed oil and all filters. When cold it starts well but still smokes a lot and is so noisy that I have to wear ear protection. When hot (after 30+ minutes use), if I turn it off, it will not start unless I let it cool-off (battery ok but engine seems to offer resistance). Now, 1 year later, I still get very heavy smoke out of muffler and excessive noise; all other features of tractor work well (front loader and backhoe) so I want to try to fix imyself the 33 year old tractor. Ihave repair and service manuals, know a little bit about car mechanics but nothing about diesels. (Where do we take compression test?, Can it be valve adjustments? Bent push rods? Any ideas where to start?

Push rod croches?

The fuel it was running on was its own oil. Now the engine over rev'ed
and was not picking up oil to the oil pump from being on its side
so the main bearings ran dry of oil. The oil also could have been
filling the cylinders and bent a rod or two. Rod bearings could
also be shot. And so on.

Wow ... thank you for the info.* Should I sell for parts? or if I open it up will I be able to get 30 year old parts? Do I need specialised tools to open and close?

Why am I getting black smoke now?

thank you for your patience

You will need to remove the head to check the cylinder walls
to see if they are damaged. You will need a torque wrench to
tighten head bolts or any other bolts needing correct torque.
New head gasket down here is around $130 US.
You would also want to drop oil pan to at least check
rod bearings. Further disassembly should be done
to check crank shaft for damage also. You would
have to split tractor in half if you need to remove
crank shaft. The cheapest thing to check is
to drop oil pan and remove rod cap to inspect
rod bearings and crank journals where rods
bolt to.

If the rest of the tractor is in good shape you may
want to look for a replacement engine.
