We're getting blasted with another foot of new snow tonight, but the new 3005 is in the garage, so that takes some of the sting of a long winter away. Of couse, it sure seems like its going to be ages before I can start mowing....

Just a note of thanks to all the knowledgeable and helpful folks on this site. Sure has made the whole experience of buying a new tractor informative and enjoyable!

Just because it is snowing is no reason not to have pics posted here already!

Aren't you going to plow with your new tractor?

beartracks, I have a 790 that I purchased a few months ago, without the input from this site ( I found it afterwards ). I was just wondering why you decided on the 3005 (790) instead of another JD model, and/or if you considered other brand. How are you planning on using it and what comparison determined your decision? What configuration (tires, 2wd/4wd & accesories) did you get?

So far I've been happy with mine. I wish the loader had more capacity (lifting a heaping bucket of wet Georgia dirt(clay) is right at the limit), but I also use it a lot in the woods and wouldn't want a bigger machine!

Phin,

I tend to over analyze everything (engineer) so I did look at Kubota, Agco, NH, MF, and Chinese. To me the 790 seemed like an great value. The dealer pretty much won me over from there. The local Deere dealer was so much more helpful and informative there was no question I was going to buy from them. Wish buying new cars was like that. This was actually fun!

Between home and our cabin we have 280 acres with many miles of trails and lots of food plots from 1/8ac to 2 acres. My family has logging equipment, so we won't be skidding any trees or anything. Primarily this tractor is for mowing the miles of trails and using the tiller for creating food plots. Our home place is on 40 acres, but we're a mile back in the woods with a gravel drive, so having somthing to grade the driveway with makes sense.

I bought a back blade and 60" KK tiller. This spring I will buy a rotary cutter. More research to do!

I will likely someday buy a loader, probably just to have it for tinkering, but its certainly not a priority.

I outfitted the 3005 with Industrial tires. For tilling, traction does not seem to be an issue, and if it's too wet, I just wont go in that area. If I cross the wife's lawn heading for the woods to mow, there's probaby less chance of getting caught!

I added 5 front weights for the tiller, but it appears there's room for another! So as you can see, most of my work does not involve much back and forth work, so I didn't need the HST. Compared to other Deere models the 790 had enough power and weight to do the work I wanted it to do while remaining reasonably portable for trailering. Its also hard to beat from a price standpoint.

The 3005 with R4's, engine block heater, 60" blade, and 5 weights, sales tax, and delivery was $12,586.15.

Any other questions, let me know.

Ed

I'm pretty biased, but great choice and darn good looking tractor. Enjoy.

Great looking tractor Ed. Better re-think that loader. Most (including me) think it's one of the handiest attachments there is.

They must have changed the front weight bracket. My 790 only holds five.

Thanks bear, I've got the same tires, but filled. Stay out of the yard when it's wet, or she'll know! It's got more power than traction, so I've not missed the HST asside from making it easier to go from forward to reverse and such.
We only have a JD dealer here local and the salesman was very nice, no pressure. Especially to a non-farm equipment person like me. So I've got no regrets on choosing JD (or the 790). So far I've not had any problems, so they've not been put through the real test.

Mech, I got my Bucher 3-spool valve in today. The power beyond is on order. So, I'm slowly on my way to duplicating your T-N-T setup (and eventually an add on grapple).

Beartracker, congrats on the 3005!! Looks sharp!! When I have my 5' KK tiller on I dont need and weights on the front of my 2520, not even the loader.

Phineas7,

The power beyond is pretty straight forward. You have to remove the tractor seat, you will have a lot more parts than you use and I had an issue with one of the connectors that come off the existing valve that turned and I had to get a wrench on it. There is a post somewhere here about someone else having the same problem. There isn't a lot of room and you need the right wrenches. Good luck and enjoy the process. I'm just about out of things to do on the tractor and we haven't had much snow to move so I don't know what to do with my weekends.
