Anyone know much about that 3.0L 5 cylinder in the 5325 vs. the
4 cylinder 4.5L in the 5425? Durability? Reliability? Too early to tell?

I've been wondering the same thing. While only 10 more hp the 4-cyl has a 50% increase in displacement and 28 lb-ft more torque. The 4 cyl seems more similar to the engine used in the next larger frame tractors. The 4-cyl has wet sleeves while the 5-cyl does not. The 5-cyl seems to use a lot less fuel, like 1 gph less.
The local dealer has several 5325's in stock but no 5425's.

I can't be of much help since I've been asking myself the same questions, and if the 5325 can do the job for me. The engine choice has no efect on the wheelbase, they seem to fit in the same chassis design.

Intuitively it would seem 50% more displacement should offer a lot more power, but as far as reliability maybe it is too soon to tell.

The 276 engine has been around since 1998 with or without a turbo.

The turbo was first used on the 276 on the 5510 in 1998 through 2000. This was continued on the 5520 in 2000 and the 5525 in 2005.

The 276 was used without a turbo in the 5410 in 1998 and in the 5420 in 2000 until 2005 when it was given a turbo for the 5425 series.

The 186 engine was introduced in 2005 for the 5225 and 5325.

We have a 5420, 276 non turbo. It is pretty much old school design, but a very durable diesel. It is quite noisy but powerful. So far, so good but only about 380 hours. I love it.

Under heavy PTO load, (heavy brush hogging) it burns about 2 gallons per hour.

The local Deere dealer has had some problems with the 5 cylinder engines. They use electronically controlled injectors that are in the valve cover. Probably more efficient than the mechanical injectors but more expensive and trouble prone. The service manager said one tractor had problems with the injection system and the other was smoking badly and the engine was replaced, it was a new tractor. The 276 engine in the 5425 goes back to about 73 or 74 I think. It was first used in the 2630 tractors. It is in the 2640 that I have, it is a 78 model. It has had some changes over the years but I think it is still basically the same engine. I think that I would rather trust the 5425 myself.

My local JD dealer has had issues with the injectors as well, his observation was to use only "fresh" diesel, purchased as needed, not in bulk and stored for any length of time (like a season's use).

I own a 5425, plenty of power. Run it mostly on the lower RPM PTO setting, even when mowing. Have about 150 hrs on it, with absolutely no problems. I have been very pleased with the performance, and reliability. Use it with brush hog to mow approx 70 acres, spraying, loader, blade, etc. Even use it in the winter to plow snow, and it starts easily. Also easy to service, everything is very accessible.
