I've got a 950 tractor with a Yanmar diesel that just blew out. Block is irrepairable. Made over 100 calls to salvage yards, tractor part reps, after market engines and nobody seems to be able to match me up with a replacement, including JD who said they sold the rights to that block casting to someone else ( WHO????). Anybody out there have a hook up for after market 3T90 model blocks or short blocks? Wisdom kicked my backside and said quit calling allover and ask those who know.

Dave, spend some "quality time" with the Yanmar forum - here on TBN. A search thru the archives might turn up some info regarding sources of Yanmar engines, long blocks, short blocks, etc.
You might also consider (I'll bet those guys have kicked this around...) getting your hands on a Yanmar engine that was adapted for boat/marine use or as a generator-pump unit.
Some time ago, I Googled for a source of Yanmar engine parts. There are a number of online businesses that supply new and reman Yanmar parts.
(My bookmark favorites was/is way bloated... so, I deleted the ones I had --)
Nonetheless, Good luck in your quest ---
Drop us a tidbit or two if you come into something that all the Deere/Yanmar owner's on this forum might find of value.

I hope you have your manual so you can get the Yanmar engine PN. If you go to the Yanmar web site, you may find it's stil a current engine. Or, as you look for a used/rebuilt engine (as AKFish wrote) from non-tractor sources, it'll be easier to find what you need.
I know the engine in my 790 is used in other applications. I expect you'll find the same with your 950's engine.
Don't sell or trade your 950's engine unless you're sure you won't have to pull some components (injection system, mounts, etc.)

Check with the guys that service Reeferunits for trailers alot of them have yanmar engines in them, and they are a good parts sorce if you can get corrrect motor info to them

Many of you with the early series compacts may encounter parts supply issues. I feel pretty confident your JD dealer will not get them from a Yanmar OEM parts dealer even if you find a cross reference (which is frankly unlikely for 95% of the parts); and they won't have most of them anyway. We have had a growing number of calls the past few months for parts for the 650 & 750 especially. There is a small aftermarket parts catalog (50 series and some 70 series) that may help in some cases---currently 17 pages and growing. Thanks for the insight guys. Came to find out through a company that was a primary aftermarket parts supplier to JD that lower engine parts ( blocks and short blocks ) have been on backorder for over 5 years with no reserve stock inventory. The original engines for the 850,950,1050, I was told, were subbed out to another 3rd world manufacturer for the casting work and there gone. If you know someone sitting on any of those deere models it might not hurt so sit on em' or part them out. They made over 60 thousand of these tractors and they certainly can't be all in the bone yard! Also, in my recent searches I didn't find any references between the 990 and 950 blocks or engines.
