Just bought my first tractor! JD 4110.

Greetings from Brookings Oregon! I just joined this forum and this is my first post. Well, I just purchased my first tractor and hope I made a good choice - a 2005 John Deere 4110 with 46 BH and 410 FEL. It has about 450 hours and is in very good shape. I paid $13k - hopefully a good price.
A little background first: My wife and I live on 5 acres here in Brookings. For the past 15 years I have been paying $75-$100 a month to get the lawns cut around the house and shop (where I run a business). I also pay about $100 to get a sloping tall grass/weed field cleared twice a year. Could have paid for a good tractor by now... but didn't have the time or know-how until researching tractors recently.
Would like to use it for the lawns, landscaping and possible future split/develop some lots out of 5 acres.
A few questions:
1. Wife has been wanting a new car. I bought this instead. How do I tell her?
2. The tractor is presently in Minnesota. Any suggestions about what transport company to use?
3. For the lawns and field, should I get a belly-type or rear-mounted mower? What models would be good for this mower?
Would appreciate any an all suggestions. Thanks a lot!

60" MMM, however you can get by with the 54" MMM.

dunno if the 62MMM works on that tractor.

Congrats. You'll like the 4110. I use an LX4 on my 4010 for mowing rough stuff and trails.

Couldn't you rent a Uhaul truck and a trailer? Rent a car; drive it out; turn it in; rent truck and trailer; load up. Don't forget the chains/straps, etc. to hold 'er down. We're hauling some furniture over to Columbus, OH next week. Gonna rent a car to drive back. Those Uhaul/Penske, etc. trucks have big hitches on them. People should be looking at renting them if they need to haul pull big stuff on occasion rather than buy and drive a big truck/pickup that guzzles gas. My pickup averages 28 mpg and hauls most stuff. Even pulled a trailer behind it big enough to bring my Gravely and its implements home. Not big enough for a 4110 plus back hoe and all though.

Thanks for the advice. The reason I need to use a transport company is I don't have a trailer yet and cannot take time off to pick it up, otherwise I would. I have received a few quotes (around $1500) from them saying it shouldn't be a problem transporting on multi-car transport trailers. A flatbed would cost about $500-$1000 more. Any reason why I shouldn't trust the multi-car transport method?

Regarding the MMM attachment: (1) What JD model will work with the 4110? I'm thinking the 60" would be good. (2) Maybe a dumb question, but is it possible to use without taking off the loader and/or backhoe? (3) If it is required or adviseable to take off the backhoe when mowing, then would it be better to get an LX4 or other or rear-mount mower... or is it still better/easier to go with the MMM? Thanks again.

(1)- The correct model for the 4110 is simply called "60 MMM"
(2)- It is always better to take the loader and BH off just for the weight and maneuverability factor. And I don't think you can have the BH and MMM mounted at the same time anyway due to the sub-frame. I usually just take the bucket off my loader and leave the rest on just to gain some agility.
(3)- That depends on what you are mowing and what obstacles you have. Trimming with a rear mower can be a real pain but is easy with a MMM

OK, now that finally received my 4110, I need some more advice.

First, an update: I did end up paying $1500 to get it transported from MN to OR. Also, I ended up buying my wife a newer car to "make things even".

The tractor arrived in decent shape, except for 2 leaks. My mechanic tightened the bolts on the right-front axle and it stopped. But after trying it out once, I noticed that it started leaking again. From what I read, and what a JD dealer rep said, it's likely a seal--hopefully not more. I will get fixed soon. The other is a very slow leak in one of the large swing (?) cylinders. The mechanic said it would be ok to just keep an eye on the hydrolic fluid level.

While at the dealer (a 3 hour drive away) this weekend, I realized that the tractor I bought did not come with the parts of the 3-point hitch that were normally removed when the 46 backhoe was installed. I called the person I purchased it from and he said he didn't remember any, but would look and let me know. As I am at least the 3rd owner, at this point, I don't hold too much hope of him finding the original parts. The dealer quoted me $1900+, then discounted to $1400 for the replacement parts.

This tractor is costing me more than I originally thought it would. I'm hoping that someone may be able to advise me where I might be able to locate the missing parts for a lot less money. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the site! I'm pretty new myself. Don't have any info for you on where to get the three point parts, but do have some info on the axle seal leak. Seems to be a common problem and that's what brought me to the site not too long ago. I thought only the 2 lift arms and 2 stabilizer arms had to be removed for the backhoe to be installed? That can't be $1400 in parts! I will post a picture from JDParts when I get home, and you can tell me what you need.

Hopefully someone with a 4110/46 will chime in here...

Wow, VTHokieJD, your documentation is excellent. My day job is running a small electronics repair/Internet company and I'm constantly on our techs about proper documentation. Thanks for your post. I printed out a copy and we will use as a guide when we attempt our axle repair. Hopefully the 4110 will look similar to your 4410.

Thanks also kennyD for your input. I agree, $1400 seems like a whole lot of money for these parts. I already made pdf's from JDPARTS.COM and sent them to the person I bought the tractor from. I circled the parts that the JD dealer said I needed. I will try to post these on this forum, so you won't have to go to the trouble. We'll see if it works when I press the submit button.
