While buying about $100 worth of filters for my 4310 yesterday, the dealer asked me if I had John Deere brand motor oil to use. He said that they had seen non-JD brand oil gum up the fuel shutoff - "even the synthetic oil".

He seemed sincere, but good salesmen always do. If what he said is true, then I'm sure one of you guys will know about it and fill me in.

Just hype-- must work on commission. Use Delo 400 Chevron or Rotella and you will be fine!!! Buy the proper weight for your climate.

agreed. Hype, although if it's a decent price then I am sure it is good oil.
I do use the Deere hydraulic fluid though. I like their SD and waterproof grease too.

Here is my take. JD fluids are excellant. They aren't overpriced. So, if you use them, there is little chance the dealer taking any issue with it when there are warranty concerns.

But using good oil like Rotella isn't bad.

"He said that they had seen non-JD brand oil gum up the fuel shutoff - "even the synthetic oil"."

Is it possible, sure, anything is possible. I AM a lubricants salesman for Texas Refinery Corp. Was this "gum up" problem caused by any good quality oil, probably not. Did it happen with synthetic oil, I highly doubt it. Could it have happened with a low quality oil that had low quality base oil stocks, low viscosity index, low flash/fire point, sure, that's possible.

Like was said previously. Most salesman work on commision, I do. Problem is many salesman stretch the truth or do anything they can to get the sale. Any statement I make when I do a demonstration is backed up by fact in writing with labratory data to support it. I doubt your salesman with the "gum up" problem had anything in writing to prove what he was saying. Basically, if it sounds like hype it probably is.

Is JD oil a good quality oil, sure it is. I can't think of one OEM manufacturer of tractors, auto's or truck/tractors that uses junk oil. Are they the best there is, no. OEM lubricants tend to be a thin line between cost and quality. They can't be to expensive or the normal every day customer would flip out over the price. Conversely, they don't use the cheapest either or large numbers of equipment failures due to low quality lubricants would give the company a bad name. They have to find the happy medium.

Thanks, guys, for taking the time to answer. It sounds pretty much like I was thinking - no big difference between JD oil and any other decent brand.

Some sales people are dumb. Others make pitches to sell what they have in inventory.

Have a fellow master gardener who bought a Ford F-250. I asked him why he didn't buy a diesel. He said the sales person told him they require more maintenance.

Hello? If you eliminate one whole system (the spark plug system), won't that cut down on maintenance needs?

Perhaps you meant for it to be a rhetorical question, but the answer is "NO".

How the heck did the motor oil come into contact with the fuel shutoff? I believe the fuel shutoff comes into contact with, er.....FUEL. The salesman is just that......

I agree with you Ralph, a lot less maintence needs. And they will last a lot longer to boot, so that makes you far ahead, of gas.
