John Deere 4720 (2007)
A couple weekends ago I was at a Deere dealership and found a new "Compact Tractor Implements and Accessories" brochure produced by Deere. In that brochure they had a table listing their various loader specification.

Here's what has me baffled...

Lift capacity at pivot pin (max height): 400x = 2341 lbs, 400cx = 2378 lbs.
Lift capacity at 500mm ahead of pivot pin (max height): 400x = 1716 lbs, 400cx = 2565 lbs.

Those numbers say the 400cx lifts 849(!) more pounds in the "real world" 500mm ahead spec than the 400x!

Lift capacity at pivot pin (59" height): 400x = 2695 lbs, 400cx = 2691 lbs
Lift capacity at 500mm ahead of pivot pin (59" height): 400x = 2149 lbs, 400cx = 2633 lbs.

Again, the 400cx beats the 400x by 484(!) pounds in that 500mm ahead spec.

I know the 400cx is a mechanically self leveling FEL, but I don't understand how that would make it have significantly HIGHER capacities at 500mm AHEAD of the pivot.

Any ideas why this is happening with the 400cx? Is it some kind of geometry thing with the way the MSL arms work?

If the 400 series are like the 300 series the CX is the more potent version. What I don't see is how the 400CX can have a greater lift capacity ahead of the pivot than it does at the pivot. Something doesn't make sense. Are you sure of your figures??

Well, all I can say is I'm sure I read the figures from the Deere brochure properly. I did a double take or two when I first saw them. I tripple checked that I wrote down the correct numbers from the brochure when I created my post.

has any body tried to get the extra parts that a cx uses and put them on the regular 400?

i told my dealer about that and he said it wouldnt work but they sure look like it to me with them sitting side by side

Greetings:
I scratched my head about this as well. So did the dealer. Several calls and he wound up talking to the item manager. Yes it is as written. They didn't explain how, but did give some real world test results. It does have to do with the geometry of the self leveling. I think the linkage at the bucket puts the efffective pivot point out beyond the physical one. Your dealer can produce some nice lift vs height charts from the sales support site. Having bought one (on 4520) I tend to believe it after some real testing here. Pallet of 3-tab roofing so many packages at 46 lb per package and the forks picked it up ok.

I bought the 400cx mostly after seeing the wife try to keep the forks level on the old loader. When using the bucket, the extra weight of my 4-in-1 cancells out any advantage.

If you get one, consider buying a good grease gun. The 400CX has 24 fittings with daily lube requirements. I wound up buying an air operated to speed things along.

Have fun, be safe, make holes

Anyone get an explanation for the 400x vs 400cx magical lift capacity increase yet? I agree, it doesn't make sense.
