Trying to install a JD ported filter cover (PN T31170 Or L55982) on a JD 4020/JD4010 as a replacement of the factor non-ported cover. The ported filter cover will fit, but it is longer than the non-ported cover. I know that this has been done using a JD factory issued holding bolt, but I just do not know which bolt. Anyone out there done this? If so what bolt did you use and what is the JD part number? All of the non-ported cover parts will work except the bolt. Since the ported cover is longer it will require a different bolt which would provide for a different holding snap ring location. It appears that you use the same hydraulic filter with the ported cover as was used by the non-ported cover but one option would be to use a longer filter if that would work. Anyone out there done this? Can anyone be of any help? Thank you.

The ported filter cover was origianlly designed for the "utility" tractor models. It is a little deeper and to correctly work on "row-crop" tractors, you need a spacer(R66068), bolt(R54750), as TxJim told you, an extra R34733 packing, and also you need to use the longer AR94510 filter like the later 40, 50, and 55 series tractor used. The picture I attached doesn't show the filter, but I am almost certain that is how it worked.

I'm sure the spacer, packing and longer filter 'could' be used and may accomodate flow surges better, but they are not required. Ported filter covers were being put on 3020's and 4020's long brfore the AR94510 filter was even designed.

I agree with RickB. The bolt for the photo you show is longer than the bolt I listed 11.004" vs 8.504" . The shorter hyd filter will work just fine without the need of the extra spacer & quad ring. Plus the AR94510 is substantially higher priced than the AR75603

Thanks for all that replied in trying to help me get this figured out, i. e. which bolt to use. I may be missing something here, if so again help me out. But, in looking up the part numbers for the standard factory non-ported filter cover for the JD4010 and early model JD4020 the JDParts is showing the R54750 bolt as the bolt used with the non-ported cover. The ported cover is of course longer than the non-ported cover, so I am wondering how could the bolt for the non-ported cover possibly work? It could not be long enough. I was trying to find someone who had done this (put a ported filter cover on a 4010 or early 4020 syncro) and hopefully they could tell me exactly what bolt to use. It surely can't be the non-ported bolt. The position of the snap ring holding the retainer is important of course. I would like to use factory parts without having to make modifications to a bolt like cutting a snap ring grove in the bolt with a hack saw trying to make it fit. As I understand it this installation of a ported filter cover can be made to work using JD factory parts, the bolt seems to be the biggest issue along with the location of the snap ring grove for the retainer. JD lists various bolts with the snap ring retainer in various locations but which bolt would be correct using the longer ported cover? I would rather not have to try to cut a snap ring grove in a bolt to make it work.

But I do see where you are coming from with the R54750 bolt since JD shows that as the bolt to be used even when the optional extended filtering kit is installed on the tractor which uses a longer non-ported filter cover and which uses the longer and more costly hydraulic filter. I don't see how the non-ported cover bolt can be used on a longer cover? I am just wondering how the bolt listed for the non-ported shorter standard cover can be the proper bolt for the longer ported filter cover. I just don't see how the bolt for the standard cover can work when the ported cover is longer. I have not taken anything apart yet but will soon.

There are only so many filter cover bolts and hopefully one of them would work without modification and would position the filter retainer properly so that the shorter cheaper filter could be used. But, maybe the only answer is to cut a new snap ring grove in a longer bolt? As I discovered, some have done exactly that and maybe that is the only way? I would rather used a factory JD bolt that was long enough with the snap ring grove in the proper place to use the shorter cheaper filter, but possibly that does not exist unless you make modifications yourself? Possibly you have to get a longer bolt and modify it yourself for the proper snap ring location?

If and when I get this figured out I will post the answer for all with pictures. If there is anyone out there who has done this, put a ported filter cover on a 4010 or early 4020, what did you do? Did you buy a JD factory bolt long enough with the snap ring grove in the proper position? Anyoneout there done this? If so what did you do, what bolt did you use, did you have to modifity the bolt for the snap ring location, etc.?

I got to thinking after I posted the spec's for the R54750 that this problem had been discussed on another tractor site(YTmag) that I frequent. I just searched that site earlier today and couldn't find the thread but I'll keep trying. I'm a computer dummy so researching for a particular thread isn't my forte'.

I posted a question on YT about the bolt. Maybe someone on there will answer my question
