I am considering buying a John Deere 4630. I farm a few hounded acres and am looking for a good tractor for my six row planter and a 25 foot disk. Any thoughts ?

Look in the ms market bulletin. You should be able to find plenty 46's in the 30 & 40 or 50 series. I personally would prefer a 40 or 50 series over the 4630 because of the 466 engine in the 40 & 50 series tractors is almost indestructable. The 4630 was a very good tractor too. I just think it was improved greatly when deere put the larger engine in it. Also you may wanna look for a 19-21 ft disk for your 46. A 25 footer will be a bit much in our mississippi soils. Years ago we pulled a 20ft 230 jd disk with a 4630. Most of the time the tractor never checked up but occaisionally we would have to hold up on the disk. Good luck in your search.

How many hours and what transmission does the tractor have? The powershift is great one if taken care of, if not it can cost over 10K to fix. The 30 series tractors as someone already pointed out have a different engine set-up than the 40 or 50 series. They don't seem to me to have the lugging ability of the 40 or 50 series.

Another thing that a 40 and 50 series has is a switchable 540/1000 rpm pto, whereas I think the 4630 only has a 1000. I always consider the 30 series is compared to the 10 series tractors. Their first predecessor of each generation (20 series for the 10's and the 40 series for the 30's) were improved upon from the original design.

40-55 series tractors above 148 pto hp are 1000 pto rpm only which would include 4640 & 4650

The cooling system in 40 50 series is much better .

I correct myself, I thought the newer ones had both. I guess you have to probably step up to the 55 series to get that. I know the 4455 have both but not sure on the 45 and 47. I know the 49 does not, we had one of those and a 4455.
