Since you can get engine to crank when bypassing with screwdriver, that proves the battery connections are ok. On the large post of the starter where the positive cable connects is a smaller wire that goes to the circuit breaker under the dash. Since you briefly had dash lights after reconnecting wires, I suspect that smaller wire on top post has a break in it somewhere or the circuit breaker may be bad. Remove the left cowling panel and check the circuit breaker. See if there is power going in and coming out of the breaker, then make sure there is power going from the breaker to the key switch.
