I cant find any other JD 4300 with a 28 hp, (the lowest I could find was 30 hp) I wonder if that is a typo? Why are 4300's (00-03) demanding such a higher price than the 790's when the hp are almost exact? Are they a much nicer tractor? Thanks

Well, the 4300 cost a heck of a lot more then the 790 new.
As far as the HP...the 4300 had 32 Engine HP and 28 at the PTO. The 790 has 27 Engine HP and 24 at the PTO. The 4300 also had a bigger (more cubic inches) engine which, for the most part, means more torque. You really need to ensure you're comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges when it comes to specs. Some folks (dealers) list Engine HP, others list PTO HP and still others list Drawbar HP (not used with CUTs).
The 4300 weighs almost 600 lbs more then the 790.

The 4300 and successor, 4310 (with had the eHydro rather then the earlier mechanical hydro) are really nice machines.
Price looks good too...this one may be worth buying...but I'll guarantee you, it won't last long at that price.

GO BUY IT!!

Hydrostatic. Not trying to start a war.

Roy pretty much summed it up.

I sure wouldn't part with my 2002 4310 for that little. I'd need a few more grand to part with it (shredder and all). So, I think you have a good price.

I knew the JD 4300 came with the hdroystatic transmission (I forgot I posted this in the JD operating forum), but the prices jumps are huge and I didn know if it was just for that or for something else.

The price on this looks far below what others are asking. It looks like most people are asking around $15,000 and not as good of deal as far as implements and hours go.

Thanks guys

I talked to the owner and the tractor is still available for sale. My uncle is going to see the tractor in the morning to check everything out and work out details, so we will see what happens. He almost took $12,250 for it.

Don't get excited until after the deal is done. You haven't seen this machine in the steel yet. I'm glad your uncle is going...why aren't you going with him?

BTW, in 2001, the 4300 cost $4000-$5000 more then the 790. I think you'll find depreciation is pretty close. This particular 4300 is just priced lower and, probably more realistically then most asking prices (and I don't think this guy will haggle at all).

The tractor is in Georgetown... about 3 hours from us and its only 30 minutes from my uncle (who lives in Austin) so that's why I'm not going. The brush hog is a JD and the box blade as teeth on it but its not a JD. My uncle is half owners of our property and he will be paying half the tractor so it's as much mine as it is his.

Sounds about right. I bought a like new used 4200 w/370 hours back in Jan. Came with a loader and finish mower. Paid 12k for it. I love it, wonder how I got by without one all these years.
