JD 790 4x4

Hi to all, After many years of service from my JD 950, It's time for a new one. Nothing wrong with the ol girl, it's just I need somwthing with a FEL and Backhoe now. I keep going back to the 790 and was hoping I could get some feed back from all those great minds out there.

I had thought about just trying to add those items to my current 950,but, that just seems like it would wear her out faster. Not to mention that I have been over here in Baghdad since 05 and I am ready for a new toy.

I will be using it for digging out my small creek in certain areas, digging stumps, clearing a place for a new barn, loads and loads of dirt and bushogging of course. "Louisiana work"

Any feed back would be VERY helpful..Also looking for prices if anyone could let me know what they had paid in the past or any quotes from dealers.

ps..I noticed a member by the name of "Gordon21"? on another post and he had the exact machine I was looking for on his Name Pic....it was a picture of his JD with the BH being used...If you read this, could you please let me know how you like your 790 with the 300 FEL and BH?

I have a 790 w/ 70 loader and 7 backhoe. It's a great combination, well balanced and ideally suited to MY needs. Not sure, from your description, how close your work is to mine though. The biggest drawbacks to the 790 are it's relatively light weight and low loader and tph lift capacities. Again, never been a problem for me. When you say stump removal for example, how big and how many do you expect to take out in a day/week?

I have a 790 with a 300 loader w haeavy duty bucket with tooth bar, LandPride Box Blade, FEL Blade w angle kit, Canopy, Tilt Meter, rear light, loaded rear tires, lights on canopy and TNT. I use the tractor to snow plow, grade roads, and occasional FEL work. Its a great tractor for me. I put in the shims to increase the pressure that the bypass kicks out on the hydraulics and can lift as much as I feel comfortable with with the loader. It has great power, tight turning radius, a lot of tractor for your money. If I did a lot of loader work I would have looked at a 3000 series tractor with hydro.

You mention loads and load of dirt. I have a 790 also. The front end loader is the only weakness for me. It will lift a bucket full even with the weight of the JD toothbar, but it won't break that out of an embankment too well. For my use I need to fit in tight woods on hilly terrain, so the 3000 series it too big and too tall. If your doing an occasional digging project it works well, but if I did it all the time (and had room) I'd spend the extra for a bigger unit.

It is just a set of shims (washers) that goes on top of the compression spring of the relief valve to increase the pressure it kicks out at. I think it came with 5 shims and I put them all in. I think maybe some have put in two kits. You can search on that part number here to find some threads. If I put in two kits I would definitely put a pressure guage on it and make sure it wasn't getting too high. It wasn't too hard to put in but I don't remember what I had to take off to get to it. I think the shims came with instructions. It is hard to tell how much it helped because I put it in a few weeks after I got the tractor. It will lift as much as I'm comfortable carrying in the front bucket and runs the TNT, angle kit, and 3 pt just fine.

The shims go under the seat on the top of the assembly that connects to the "rate of drop" knob. There are two nuts and I think the shims go under the nut on the left when looking from the front of the tractor.

Thanks for all the help guys. The stumps I would be removing are usually 12"-18" diameter. Dirt hauling would be taking topsoil from the far back of my property and using it to fill in my low spots around my home and front acreage here and there. Digging drainage ditches. Having a few truck loads of sand and dirt brought in from my budies dumptruck, loading gravel,etc.

The one thing I don't wont is to be underpowered.

I found a JD 790 package deal with FEL and woods BH for around $19,999.
Sound decent?

I am strongly looking at the L3400 Kubotas.

I know what Im have put my 950 through over the years....Dang..I am in worse shape than it is..Nothing runs like a Deere.

But seriously....Your views on the Kubotas?..I am guessing around 26000 for what I want in the L3400 with FEL and BH..sound about right?

Chuck, if you are in the military, thanks for your service! Wish we knew all that is going on there that is not on the news.

If you are looking at gear tractors, the L3400 is around $16,400, and the BH75 backhoe with a thumb is around $6,800 more or less, on both. The stumps you are looking at will be more stubborn than you think, and more weight in the tractor, and more loader, and backhoe hydraulic power will also be a very good thing. I like the JD 790 a lot, but it is not as strong as the Kubota offerings you are looking at, and is lighter. Also, the shuttle shift on the Kubota, while not a syncro, is much nicer to operate for me, and I would choose that over the 790 for much loader work. Hydro in the L3400 would add another thousand, or so.

Hi Chuck in NH...Bet it's a little cooler where you are?
I appreciate all the help everyone has giving me. It sucks when you know you can not jump in your truck, go down to the dealers and kick the tires...That day will come..I have already emailed a Kubota dealer 30 minutes from my home so we shall see how the service starts from the get go.....Make me wait to long for a responce, and I tend to remember that type of service..

After all the info,spec readings,comparison sheets, etc. I really am leaning towards the Kubota. I am not worried about the money,just for the fact I believe you get what you pay for. I believe everyone on this board has come to that cocnlusion at least once in their life....a few times too many when it comes to me.

I am buying a tractor thats going to give me 25 years of service just like my old JD did..It's just time to take advantage of newer technology...The 790 I feel would be just like my 950..Funny part about that though,is that my dad bought it new for under 6000 grand in the early 80's and I think the resale on it will be very good...That says a lot about JD and quality products from Kubota. Great machines hold their value.

Sorry to ramble on..This is my relax time of the evening....Baghdad is not so bad..LOL...I am sure a few of you guys have gone through mortar barrages before...You know..Pucker factor..it is getting old though.

Now I am just waiting to hear from the Kubota dealer in Covington La.
