I've seen a new open station FWD 5425 on local dealer's lot. It has 3 remotes in the middle, two at the back and a power reverser transmission. The tires are 28" R-1, no weights. How much do you think I should expect to pay for this configuration? It's now considered a prior model, is that right, replaced by the 5 series? Which of the new 5 series would configure closest to this particular 5425?

all depends on where you live. is this a rental return perhaps or does it have 0 hours? comparible 5 series tractor would be a 5075M.

Not a rental return, it is zero hours.

They are asking what I think is too high, in the high $30's way beyond $35K.
I may be wrong, but I would think that kind of price would be more in line with a cab 5425. I only inquired briefly when I stopped in to order some parts. The salesperson did indicate a willingness to compete to some extent with other makes in the area and suggested I come back and see the manager who was out that day.

We have several other brands around but the next JD is over 100 miles. I could probably get a Kubota 7040 equipped similar in the $29K range, maybe a little less for an equivalent NH TD or CaseIH Farmall. I was thinking the open station JD should be in the low $30's not the high end of that decade. I suppose I can always make an offer if I don't pick up something else.

High 30s seems way out of line.

I bought my 2005 JD 5525 cab 4wd for $41K new.

The 5075M configured as closely as I can to the OP's description of the 5425 is $40,495.

This should help a bit--In Aug 08 I bot 5325, open station, 4wd, 3 remote back, 522 loader, power reverser 12x12 for 37,100. The third remote was added at the dealer. The 5325 has a different motor than the 5425. I priced 5425 at the time, but, sorry, I can't remember the difference in the two models.

If I'm not mistaken, it was about a $1,300 to $1,700 jump in price to the next step. Might have been a bit more between the 5325 and the 5425 versus the 5425 and 5525.
