JD 5105M vs. JD 6330

I´ve been a member of this forum for a while now reading and researching John Deere tractors in the 75-100 hp range. A little background first. My father and I have 45 head of cattle and bale around 350 round bales of hay per year in east central Kansas. We have our JD 535 baler paired with a 1992-75hp JD 2755. Currently we cut the hay with a JD 260 disk mower paired with a 1975-84hp Ford 7000. This tractor has been rock solid through the years but we've decided to update this fall.

We have narrowed our decision to either a new 5105M or a slightly used (<500 hours) 6330. The 5105M is 90hp at the PTO and the 6330 is 85hp. Both tractors are priced in the upper $50´s.

I visited the four-state farm show a couple weeks ago in Pittsburg, KS and was able to see a 5095M next to a 6330. Both tractors would be fitted with SL-loaders, MFWD, and cabs. Both have the power reverser and several options for transmissions. We have no intentions of working ground; these will be used strictly for baling hay and feeding hay during the winter.

In talking to the Deere dealers, they're trying to persuade me into a 6-series in the possibility that we expand our operation in the future. I'm leaning towards the 5-series because it will satisfy the needs I have. We not looking to expand, as we both have full-time jobs besides our small ranching operation. I've heard it said that the 5M Series is basically a 6-series tractor in a 5-series body. I like the idea of a smaller size with the same amount of power.

I'm looking for suggestions. Which of the two tractors listed above would you choose and why? Thanks for your time.

what is the price difference between the two? if the 6330 cost less you will get more for your money. just my Opinion.

Reviewing prices on machinefinder and tractorhouse, a new 5105M is around $58K. A like-new 6330 can be had for right around $62k. More for your money, what will the 6-series do that the 5-series won't do on a small ranching operation? I understand the difference if I was engaging ground work. Thanks.

One thing that you have to put up with the whole time of ownership is engine noise! Quieter engines are normally from a better smoother working design.

My recommendation would be to listen to both at the same time, if not possible at least at two different times and you should hear the difference. I'd be taking the 6000 series because of that reason on it's own!

I think you should get the 6330 these tractors have hella good resale value no joke.

I have a '96 85 hp 6400 that's been a great tractor. I've never driven a 5100 series tractor but looking at them side by side the 6000 series looks much more substantial. I also pull a JD 535 baler and I think the 6000 series will handle the weight of the baler better.

The 6330 has more hydraulic flow capacity, class II/III hitch, longer wheelbase by about 8-9 inches, more weight about 1,500lbs. A slightly larger tractor overall which when handling bales in the winter of the same size will have a slight edge over the 5105M.

I would prefer the 6330 over the 5105M, while both will handle the bales and haying operation why limit your ground engaging capabilities? Better to be prepared since who knows what the future may bring.

Either tractor will suit your needs. All things being equal I would go 6330

The longer heavier tractor will ride better on a rough field.

The lighter tractor will tread lighter and won't leave as bad of ruts in wet conditions.

If the price were the same, I'd vote 6330.
