Looking at getting a tiller to work about a 1000 sqft garden with my 2305.. is the 647 overkill? Any other recommendations? Oh, and anyone know what a 647 costs?

That's what I use. I paid $1100 for mine used at auction. New is about $2200-$2400.

What makes the 647 so much more than the king kutter and other brands

I suspect Deere gets a premium for their equipment. That said these are very good tillers with top quality tines. These tillers are very tough, you can run them through a rockpile without any signs of wear. At least in the Rocky mountains I have to do this often. Going on three years with my 673 tiller and it is still in good shape.

To be fair I have heard lots of good reports here for the King Kutter tillers too.

The 647 is a great tiller. When I was shopping for a tiller for my 2210, I ended up with the Woods GTC 52-2. I think I paid around $2K about 3 years ago. The thing is built like a tank. The 2210 handles the 52" pretty well, as long as you don't try to bury the tines at full depth in virgin ground. In soft or previously tilled areas, you could till as deep as you want, but it certainly works the tractor.
