Hi,
I am new to this website & tractors. Basically, I am a city boy turning into a hobby farmer. I am learning a lot about tractors but I still have a lot to learn.
I am going to look at a 1998 John Deere 870(4wd, low hours) with a front end loader this weekend. Can anybody give me an idea of the fair market value? What was the cost of this tractor when it was new?
Does anybody know what the differences between the 870 & the new 790?
Thanks for any replies,
Steve

Greetings Steve,

I can't answer all of your question but I'll tell you a bit about the 790 'cause I have one. The 790 is made in Japan by Yanmar (the whole tractor, not just the engine). It was preceded by the 770. It's part of Deere's "value" line with gear only trans and less refined ergonomics (no cup holders). Great tractor though and I love mine.

Someone else will have to chime in for sure but I think the 870 is the line that was replaced by the 4000 series. Probably US made with Yanmar engines. Hydro trans available and such. I don't think there is anything common between an 870 and a 790, two entirely different machines.

Not a whole lot of help but I'll be watching to see what else others have to say about it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

14k sounds about right to me, it was probably 17-18k new.

the x70 series tractors were also made by yanmar. the 790 has about 3 more pto hp than the 870 but also comes with less weight, less ground clearance, less driver room, less 3ph lift all because the 870 is based on the 970 and 1070 chassis

Stick around here awhile longer, think about what you want to do as a hobby farmer and make sure you are looking at enough tractor. I know engineers making 80k at auto suppliers and farming 300 hundred acres as a "hobby".

Good info on the X70 series rdln, thanks. Do you know how the 770 related to the 870, 970 and 1070? If a 790 is a grown up 770 is the 990 a grown up 970? What tractors did the 4XXX series replace, or were they the first made here in the US? Thanks again /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

the 870 had its own front axle, a little lighter than the 970 and 1070, these latter two appear to share rear axles with the 4500 thru 4700. The 670 and 770 were smaller. I believe you can swap front sheetmetal between all of the XX0s.

Actually I believe that the 790 engine is
identical to the 870.

990 seems to be a 1070 without draft control but the 1070 was advertised at 38.5 hp. I dont know whats going on there.

I would say the 4xxx's replaced the x50s from the 80's only because you could get hp near 50 with a 1450. confused yet? I am.
