    Default 4x10 vs 4x20

I've been contemplating a 4x20 tractor, but have been presented the option of buying a 4710 with 380 hours, loader and backhoe.

How do the newer machines compare to the 4x10s? Anything specific to examine when looking at the 4710?

    Thanks.
    James.

The 4170 is equivalent to the 4320. Hopefully someone can chime in with differences other than the hp/series number mismatch.

The 4x10 series with the Yanmar engines have an excellent reputation. The drivetrains are very similar with the exception being the engine. The 4x20 models all have JD engines of the same displacment and all are turbocharged. The horsepower differences are in fuel management and turbo. If the 4710 is clean, good condition and priced reasonable - it will not be available long.

Nailed it. Neighbor had a smaller 4x10 series (4410?) for a while. Solid little machine. Mainly what you'll be missing is some new fun features and a little more comfort. The tractors will do relatively the same work. If it's in good condition, and clean, I see no reason not to get it.

One question I keep coming back to is why were these models only made for two years, whereas the 4x20 are enjoying a much longer product life? Makes me wonder if something wasn't quite right about the 4x10s.

    I pulled this from tractordata.com:

    JD 4700 48.0HP 3,600 lbs 2000-2003
    JD 4710 46.3HP 3,450 lbs 2003-2004
    JD 4320 48.1HP 3,850 lbs 2005-????

I had a 2000 4700 since new that I sold earlier this year. Never had a single issue with it during the 12 years that I owned it. Very solid CUT. The 4710 should be great machine assuming it is in good condition. My 4700 had 1250 hours on it when I sold it.

The 4710 had some changes from the 4700. JD removed the double brake pedal arrangement. my 4700 has a pair of pedals (L & R) on the left of the operator platform, and a single brake (master?) pedal on the right. The 4710 has only the pairing.
The 4710 dropped the 4700's pull-up parking brake lever/handle left of the seat and had a stupid little pull knob below the control panel. All in all I felt the JD engineers were assigned to reduce the costs. There were other small changes that I've forgotten.
The 4720 went back to a pull-up brake, and improved some features, like the adjustments to the 3-pt swing arms. Wish they would make the seat swivel side-to-side like the NH's.
You can find threads about the front axle leaking oil, about the dash bezel fogging up, and I had to take mine to the dealer for tightening the upper bolts on the engine to fix another oil leak.
And isn't the -20 a different cowl design that enables basic maintenance eg checking oil, than the -00's and the -10's?
If I wasn't livin' easy on SS, I'd jump into a -20 tomorrow.
