Been shopping around for a tractor to pull a 20' mower in horse pasture during summer and a manure spreader in the winter. This will be a 2nd utility class tractor for us - we have leased an additional 200 ac of ground through the winter for a total of 350ac. I think I will burn up the other tractor (5093e) mowing all this. Terrain is moderate roll horse farm, mowing low pasture grass - very little thick stuff (unless I let it get away from me), and almost no brush.

In the current JD line I understand that the 6 series frame is required to handle the tongue weight of a 20' batwing. I'm also thinking 2WD works best for us and no loader - I will not do any plowing and we try hard not to be in too much mud - means we are tearing up pasture. The 5093E is 4wd and a loader, we also have a 5055d, and a 5105 with loaders. Our budget and mindset is keep it simple and keep it as cheap as possible. We like the cab on the 5093, but it not an absolute requirement for this tractor given it's purpose (we don't mow in the rain).

There are good prices on 2012 - 2014 6015D's and 6115D's and I think that is because people don't like the 9x9 trannys. Also just talked to my local dealer, and they made it sound like there might be some actual problems with those trannys. I can't find mention of problems here or other forums. This may be dealer FUD (Fear Uncertainty Doubt) to move me from a $30k - $40k tractor to a $60k - $80k tractor (They were pushing used 6M's and 6R's).

I can't afford the $60k rig (+about $20k for a mower), so the other alternative is to back down to something like a 5083 and go for a 15' mower.

What do you guys know about the 6D's? Any problems common with these things? Does the 9x9 create problems out in the real world?

I've never heard of significant "failure" problems with the 9x9 reverser tranny. Just a general frustration of not being able to get that "right gear" for mowing, haying, etc. Alot of either too fast - too slow..

My local dealer has had to split them to fix some transmission issues. I was considering a 6D but between only 9 gears and the shop issues - I passed.

Why wouldn't you look at an older machine for your needs? a 4020 sounds like it would be ideal or even a 4440? Especially if 2wd will work for you?

I agree that's what I just done bought me a used 100hp to pull the new 15ft batwing for mowing duties, take the wear and tear off my newer tractors and not hurt the pocket book to bad.
Maybe something like this, low hours and looks clean JD 4430 pull around new 20ft batwing http://www.greatplainskubota.com/m/showcase_unit.htm?id=691029&status=2
