I may be attending an estate auction in a couple of weeks and they have listed:

John Deere Tractor "5400", 4WD, 1316 hours, with a 540 JD loader.
The model year is not listed...any idea?

Can anyone give me some information on this tractor...hp, size...utility, and maybe what it would be worth if in good condition.

I am looking for a bigger tractor in the 50 hp range and this may be worth checking out. From the looks of the equipment being auctioned I am guessing 45-55 hp. Looks like 6'equipment, the person had around 30 ac of land, cattle, but no hay equipment; of course that could of been sold before the auction.

I won't be able to look at the tractor until the day of the sale. The only problem is there is a large Ag Expo Show that same day I want to go to. So I may stop early that morning and look over the tractor and decide which one I want to atted that day. May be able to do both if they don't split the auction.

I have a JD 5300 with 540 loader MFWD. Very good tractor. No problems. The 5400 has 60 pto hp. Mine is a 1994-95 model. They were first made in 1992. Can't remember final year but about 1997-98. Replaced by the 5000 ten series which are not that different. Nice utility tractor with more beef than a CUT. 540 loader will lift about 2500#. If memory serves me correctly, tractor and loader will weigh about 6000-6500# and the lift is about 3500#. Minimal repairs on mine over the years except for new clutch last year. Solid engine, transmission and hydraulics. I have about 3000 hours on mine. Bought my used in 1998 for $20000 including FEL with 900 hours. They still hold their value not far off from that from a dealer. Probably cheaper at auction. Hours are quite low on that tractor.

This should give ya some ideas. Pricing is what I believe is on a dealer lot in 2006.

Good luck in your decision.

Thanks for the info guys!!

So the 5400 is about equal to the 5X25 series in size. Thats good...I'll take a good look at it. With the age and hours on the tractor it looks like he averaged between 100-150 hrs a year. Thats not alot of hours.

The 5400 is the first generation of the 5000 series which sounds like you already figured out. The 5400 is a 2.9liter or 179 ci 3 cylinder @ 60 hp pto and the 5410, 5420 and 5425 are a 4.5 liter 276 ci 4 cylinder @ 65 pto.

I don't know if 3 or 4 cylinder matters much, the current 5403 (economy series) which is rated @ 64 pto uses the 2.9 liter 3 cylinder. I have read that a 3 cylinder engine is naturally balanced, but I don't remember enough about the article to give any specifics and there are several different harmonic orders to consider.

However the engines are balanced, I would drive both a 3 cylinder and 4 cylinder to see/hear/feel if one is quieter/smoother or diferent enough to make a difference.

rdln- that was for a 4WD.

Since my last post I received " The Officail Tractor Bluebook- 2007 Edition"
a 1997 5400 4WD Retailed new for $31471
Used Trade average $11960- $14480
Used Retail average $19830- $22030

Previous years are of course lower, just a basis to go off of if you are bidding against dealers.

Thanks for the info on price. This will come in handy if I can make it to the auction November 4th. Still trying to decide auction or Ag Expo.
