Tractor
2001 John Deere 445
Hi everyone,

New member here. Figured I would introduce myself in this forum area. I was looking a couple of months ago for a replacement lawn tractor to mow with. Then I decided to get something that could do some light ground engaging. So, I started to look into some new GTs. Well, after looking at what was available, I wasn't really impressed (in my price range of $3500 give or take).. So, I decided to look for a used GT.

That's when I found my 2001 JD 445 /60" deck with 564 hours on it about a month ago. I was able to get it for $3,850 delivered to my door. Since then I have added a Ruegg 3-pt hitch and a JB Sr.

So far I'm fairly impressed with my purchase and the tractor runs great! So, do you think I got a good deal on the purchase price?

When i bought my x540 there was a 445 with 3pt, weights, deck and about the same hours as yours, but i think it was a couple years newer?? They wanted 6k for it.So I think you did good. Enjoy:thumbsup:

It is a workhorse. Taken care of, it will last a long, long time. You did good, and can't imagine you will regret it.
For one thing, you will get out of it what you paid for it about anytime you want. 2001 was about the last year (or next to last) that they were made. Switched to the X series then and its equivalent is the X485.
The 445 is better (IMO) because it has good filtering design for incoming air with the hood arrangement and side panels being very tight. The one-piece tilting hood of the X series negated that feature and a lot of dust and trash gets into the radiator screen.

And it doesn't matter what we think of your purchase, it is what you think. :D

I don't see anything less than the X700 series comparing with the older 400 series. The X485 isn't even close to the tractor that the 445 is. The 445 has hydraulics and is all shaft driven. Not so for the X485.

You did good and made a smart buy instead of buying an inferior new machine. The 445 will last a very long time. Might want to check if it has the plastic CAM gear and get that replaced. Change the fluids, keep it greased, and you'll never need another tractor, ever. Like the fuel injection too; deals with the today's bad gas much better.

BTW, you might want to put some weights on the 3PH when lifting with that loader for better traction. If the back wheels come off the ground, you will be free-wheeling.

If you get snow, get yourself the hydraulic scraper blade or the snowblower. Both are awesome attachments.

.........

The X485 is about an exact copy of the 445. Same shaft drive and hydraulics, for all practical purposes. I have them both. :D

And by year 2000, the plastic cams were long gone from the production line.
