Scott's with a blown Kohler motor
...only my second post....if there is already a good comparison of these (in my estimation) "similar" tractors, I apologize as Ive not found it.....as the owner of a Scott's 2048 with a blown Kohler motor and with 4 acres or so to mow, I was curious what pros and cons folks had on these models and suggestions for my replacement ..... and, yes, I know the 100 series can't compare to x series....I've salivated over the x749 but don't have that kind of cash right now..... in the $3k and under category, who should I choose and why.....

:welcome:

I'd suggest looking for a used 425 with less than 7-800 hours for a much better dependable rig than anything new at that money.
The best IMO would be a 455 diesel with a 54" deck but it will be another $k or so. But you will have something solid to work with and they won't lose their value over the next several years.

Did you ever get a new mower?

I am selling my cub cadet LT1050 and never looking back.... I vote no Cub Cadet.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. You could probably find a nice 425 for under $3000, use it for 5 years/500 hours, and sell it for $2500.

The only advantages I can see with having something new like the D170 would be 1.) factory warranty 2.) clean unscratched shiny paint makes me happy 3.) the D170 looks to be better ergonomically designed. It might be a good choice for you if you're only looking to cut your grass once a week, 8 months out of the year.

However, an older GT or 400 series would clearly be my choice. I would stay away from all of those entry level John Deere's- you get what you pay for and the quality just isn't there. The decks are thinner, the anti-scalping wheels don't adjust in height or orientation, they have entry level Briggs & Stratton/ Kohler engines, cheaper wheels, etc.

I frequently browse the local craigslist just to stay current on how much things are are selling for. Here in Columbus, there is a nice 425 for sale with about 600 hours and asking $3250. You can probably find a comparable one in your region.

Save $500.00 John Deere 425 garden tractor

cooper,
That mower looks pretty good to me, I never could find anything close to a 425 or 455 when I was looking a couple of years ago. Still haven't seen anything in my area since buying the x749. Would much prefer the mower you pictured to a new D170.

Thanks for all the good advice....I decided to go with the Husqvarna GTH26V52LS - fabricated mowing deck (not stamped) and a 26HP Kawasaki motor, can run implements, appears built very well overall, and all for $3k brand new....if the D170 had the Kawasaki motor, I'd have gone with it....

.....the blown Kohler command engine in my Scotts 2048 (with less than 300 hours on it & religiously changed Mobil 1 oil) has me focused on the only other engine choice out there that appears "bullet proof", Kawasaki.....I sure wish more tractors were powered by the Honda GX motor....everything else I own is Honda GX powered, and I can't fault anything in those motors....

Also, it's tough for me to buy used not knowing how well someone has or hasn't taken care of their equipment....alot of the used JD stuff around here that I've run across has been pretty beat up and still commanding a premium price.....

1*D170
2*Cub Cadet GT1054
3*Cub Cadet STLX 1054
4*Husqvarna LGT2554
5* Sears GT6
I was curious what pros and cons folks had on these models and suggestions for my replacement
1*Lawn tractor
2*Lawn tractor
3*Super lawn tractor .
4*Sears lawn tractor with different paint and label.
5*Husqvarna lawn tractor with different label and paint.
These are all Big Box Store entry level items.
I would recommend a Cub Cadet 2500 or 3000 series garden tractor .

I am selling my cub cadet LT1050 and never looking back....
6*I vote no Cub Cadet.
6*I found the Cub Cadet 2500 and 3000 series to be the most bang for the buck than anything else out there when I purchased my GT2554.

with 4 acres to mow, you'll quickly wear out anything a box store has to offer.

When buying something like a lawn mower, if it looks well taken care of and is an older model such as the 425-455 it probably was well serviced too. Most of us that buy high end equipment try to take care of it.

You did get some good advice but hope you get decent service out of your new mower.anyway.

Haha, don't say it like that. 20+ years my dad mowed multiple properties (more than 4 acres) with the cheapest pos mowers he could find. It worked pretty well for him too. His philosophy was that a new $1000 Murray every 3 years is still a lot cheaper in the long run than paying $5-10k upfront for a new Deere. I remember during one Christmas dinner in the late 1980's my dad about fell out of his chair when our neighbors told us how much they paid for their 318.

All that was pretty depressing on me when I was a kid because I had just about every John Deere model toy you could imagine, but all the tractors/mowers we had were red.

It wasn't until my dad was older (and after he borrowed a neighbors 4wd JD 1050) until he ever considered a owning JD. He ended up buying a 455, then a GT275 a few years later, now is considering a new 5000E or M series.

I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that you can't really put a price on satisfaction or a job well done.
