John Deere LX 188 runs great but when mower deck on backfires through Carb

I have changed plugs, cleaned carb, checked fuel pump and backfire solenoid and still have a major backfire through the carb when a load is applied. Otherwise the tractor runs fine. Any suggestions as I am out of ideas. Thanks

Does the backfire only occur when the PTO is engaged? Or does it also backfire when you load the engine by moving the tractor? (Flooring the forward pedal) Try towing something to increase the load. If it does not backfire, That may indicate an electrical issue with the PTO clutch.

My previous JD was a LX188. What a great mower that was.

I'd say it's starving for fuel if it happens when you apply a load (it needs and uses more fuel under load)
