Hey all,

I'm looking for a project tractor to play around and fix up. I've come across a John Deere 316 and STX38, both need some work. The 316 had a broken connecting rod (that scares me). I think I can get them for $100-200. Would you guys invest in fixing up any of those models? I figure I'd have to invest another $300 in parts.

Thanks

The 316 is 10x the tractor an STX is. That said, an STX has a 12.5HP? Kohler with a vertical shaft and easily swapped out. The 316 came in two phases: a mid-late 70's version with a Kohler and an early-mid 80's version with an Onan. They no longer make Onan and many people have swapped out exploded Onans for V-twins from small engine warehouse. The 316 is a GARDEN tractor with true ground0engaging capability. The STX 38 is a suburban, light-duty lawn tractor and is fine for mowing and light duty lawn chores. I would personally take the 316, but that's me. Don't be afraid. buy a service manual and take your time. ask questions.
