I just finished installing a 3 point hitch on my 1984 john deere 420 and hooked it up to my 4' box blade which weighs around 300lbs. The tractor struggles to lift the box blade when empty and it wont lift at all loaded with gravel. The hydraulics feel very weak. How much weight should the tractor be able to lift with the 3 point hitch? I have heard people lifting 700lb ballast boxes so there is definately something wrong with my tractor.

Also, how many inches of lifting range should I have measured at the end of the lift arms? Mine does not move more than a few inches up and down.

Have you checked your pressure on the hydraulics? Don't know about your model but my x749 can lift my 420lb land plane with a 180 lb helper standing on it without issues.

I think those tractors are suppose to lift around 450 lbs by Deere but they actually lift more. In order to move the 3 pt to it min and max range you have to set the deck stop to all the way down.
