How important are those little foam plugs that sit under the caps in the oil reservoirs? Can I throw them out? It's a pain to pinch them to pull them out when I check my levels before mowing.

Maybe they are there to stop dust from getting into your oil.. and act like breathers. Just a guess.

How much dust collects in the vicinity of these reservoirs??

Quite a bit of clippings, etc....but the screw caps seem to bottom out and fit tight, as whenever I unscrew them, the foam plugs are positively clean.

They are there to insure a good defense against dust/dirt intrusion through the breather
