445 Battery Light On

   / 445 Battery Light On #21
From TM1517:

On the 445

From the manual page number 5-184:

1st paragraph, 3rd and 4th sentence:
A discharge light (H3) warns the operator if the stator stops charging. The discharge light circuit monitors stator output, not battery voltage.

4th paragraph:
If the stator output current to the rectifier/regulator stops, the rectifier/regulator provides current to the discharge light (H3) to light the lamp.

Follow test procedures:
So check output voltage (AC voltage (minimum is 26 VAC) and current from stator!
Current output from regulator 13A

Well this may be way out there, but I suppose it's possible that you are getting a lot of AC across the battery terminals from the alternator. Battery's don't like AC...
Richard

I have ordered a new VR to try. The AM126304 is $69.50 GFP online.
Stens aftermarket has # 435 180 for $26.99.
I will try one of these cheap deals.

I will check the voltage & DC current details before & after I replace the VR.
I know that diodes can fail & you get some AC voltage on the battery.
I'm not sure how a VR works. Maybe large zener diodes?
I think the input is ~ 26 VAC from the sensor.
So it has to convert this to DC, so it's can't be just a full wave bridge.
Thanks for mentioning this as a possibility.
It will be about a week before I get the new VR.

I know this thread is old, but I need to post this info.
I did not mention here another symptom.
It was also fouling the left plug about every 4 hours.
1300+ hrs on the machine & at ~1000 hrs I replaced the rings.
So I expected the left piston was just worn too much. (It was not bored)
But after all this & replacing the V Regulator I got a surprise.
I have used the mower now for about 30 hours without fouling that plug.
So... whatever that semi/intermittently-bad VR was doing was fouling the plug.

I have 5 JD mowers now, including an almost new X540 and this 445 mower is still my favorite.
