Yes. Up until the shavings popped out, it looked like a big waste of time. Everything else was completely kosher.

The strange thing is that these things were sitting right at the center drain hole. I mean they came out immediately as the plug was removed. I wonder why? The plug is not at a low point, and it's not magnetic. Could it be left over from tapping the drain hole for the plug? That would be odd. Has anyone else run into this?

Just another of life's little mysteries, I guess.

Hi killer b,

Found the same when I did the front axle on the 3520... I suspect it's the manufacturing process that particular subcontractor uses... or I should say their lack of clean-up/deburring/polishing during production...

An option is to fill the front axle with kerosene and drive around for a bit with the 4wd to stir things up, then drain... could repeat even if you seem to have worked a significant amount of things up... or just go with it (I did).

The 3x20 series seems to have a lot of front seal failure... maybe for this very reason...

If you look at that hydro in the light when you transfer from bucket to bucket, you will notice it "shimmering" from all the particulates from the axle, shaft, & gears wearing in too... bound to lose that kind of metal.

Brown,

I'm toying with the idea of maybe draining it out again in a few hours just to see if more junk come out. There is only 1.2 gallons in there, so it wouldn't cost much.

Have you done a 2nd change yet by any chance?

Hi Killer B,

Not as yet--have only put about 30 hours on since the change in April--although the woods will be freezing up soon!

Just by the nature of the speed these thing gets used at, and the shape of that axle though, I am sure any additional bits will settle out into the low spots on each side & in the middle, and tend to stay put... not really moving that fluid a whole lot, just coating surfaces with it.

If you decide to flush I'd be very interested to hear what you do find!
