Anyone have enough hours on a 2720 to give us a review and answer some questions? I have a few questions:

I noticed the 2720 has a bit more ground clearance that the other 2x20s and wonder if that translates to greater ground clearance with the MMM in full upright position.

Which MMM does 2720 use? Is it the 7 iron, drive over?

The loader is 200cx...does it have greater lift capacity and operational speed than the 2305?

Anyone using a rear brush cutter with the 2720? How's it work so far and what is the ground clearance in full upright position?

Reason I ask is my property has some rugged areas that require good ground clearance and I'd like to know if a rear brush cutter would just dig into the ground when the tractor begins it's uphill climb. The 2305 I have is out of the equation...period...the 4720 I have will go anywhere without clearance issues, but I can only access certain parts of the area at certain times of the year without tearing up the ground. Maybe the 2720 would be a good compromise. The 3x20s are more than I'd like to spend and more capable than my needs. I can also use my 200cx loader from the 2305 with the 2720 with a slightly different mounting base. Just some thoughts...if any of you have anything to share, please jump in. Thaks.

Hi Engine66,

Hope I can help at least a little. I don't have a mmm or a brush cutter-(yet), but I do have very hilly rough ground. I know its not the same but so far I have not dragged the backhoe sub-frame or bucket when going over this very rough place. I can't see it being to big a problem with the brush cutter but you may have to be very careful with the mmm.

For the 2720 JD lists the 62" drive over mmm or the regular 72" deck, not the 7 Iron. Maybe they can make it work.

As for the 200cx, the 2720 has the greater lift capacity but the lift times are about the same, 2305 is slightly faster but doesn't go as high.

I chose the 2720 over the 2305 because of my "bad lands" and the full cat-1 3 point hitch. So far the 2720 has been more than enough with ground clearance and power yet small enough for the many tight places.

 I don't think that is accurate. From JD's loader spec sheet:

Lift capacity to 59 in. at pivot pin:
2520/200cx 1127lb.
2305/200cx 844lb.

Loader raising/lowering time:
2520/200cx 3.19/1.95
2305/200cx 5.56/3.39

Bucket dump time/regen:
2520/200cx 3.19/1.25
2305/200cx 5.56/2.17

Max. lift hieght at pivot pin:
2520/200cx 78.4in.
2305/200cx 73.4in.

I can't believe JD would have actaully slowed things down with the 2720, so it looks like the 2520/2720 is about 75% faster (IMO more than slightly faster, but in favor of the 2520/2720, not the 2305) than the 2305 while lifting about 35% more to less than 10% higher.

You are right. This "Compact Tractor Implements" brochure I picked up at Deere is way off (according to the Deere web site). Makes me wonder how much more isn't accurate. Love the JD tractors but the manuals and brochures have way too many mistakes.

Well Engine66, thats another plus for the 2720!

Thanks 2Malamutes for setting things straight

Hey Engine,

You might want to keep your eyes out for a slightly used 2520 instead of a brandy new 2720. A few people here have jumped to the 2720 from the 2520. For loader work I don't think there would be any noticeable difference, they have the same pump output, within 3PSI in the output pressure, ( I figure that's well within measurement error factor) and weight is comparable. Given that, the loader will lift the same load at the same speed, stall just as easy with the big bucket, and the tractor will still blow off the tires just as easy when pushing into or pulling out of material.

Other than about 3 PTO HP and a larger engine, (Ya, couple of other details but that about it) they are the same tractor. If I needed to hog with a 5 foot blade or mow in high, I would look at the big boy, Since I use mine for loader, tiller, and plowing, 26.5 HP works just fine on this size chassis. If I was looking for a 30 HP chassis, I would look to the 3x20's,

I think the 2x20 chassis is a little small and light to try to put 30HP to the ground effectively, but what do I know, ask my daughters...:D

My 2 cents,

Tom

Can you explain what you mean about blowing off tires?

I think he means spin the tires, as in lose traction instead of killing the engine from overload.

I have had a 2520 and currently have a 2720. The only place there is a noticeable difference (capacity/clearance/lift/push/pull/MMmowing) in the two is in rear pto.
I upgraded because I use a 5' RC as much as all other operations combined. It was worth it for me because I can either cut faster, wetter, or wait longer between cuttings and still stay with one machine that both meets my needs and is still light enough to mow comfortably.
