Looks like it was an option according to TRACTOR DATA but I have yet to see one in the classifieds of tractorhouse. Did Deere in fact make a 4wd version of the 4020?

Yes. A Hydrostatic Front Wheel Assist option was introduced in 1968 for the 69 model year and remained available until the 4020 went out of production in 1972.

Another yes. Here's Deere's parts look up showing a power front wheel drive axle for the later 4020. John Deere - Parts Catalog

I would rather have a nice 4020 2 wd in good shape with 15.5x38 or 16.9x38 rubber. I would think trying to find one with 4wd would limit your chances of finding a good one too much. With weighted rear tires it will go anywhere you need to go.

I put 18.4x38 rubber on mine years ago and they interfered with the 3pt hitch using some implements.

If you have to go 4wd I would look at something newer, with MFWD.

Would it be fair to say that the 4050 is viewed as favorably as the 4020? I noticed it can be readily had with mfwd.

Most 4020s came standard with 18.4x34 rear tires. At least they did in Michigan. Tire sizes may vary across the country depending on the crops grown and the soil type. I never saw a front wheel assist model, but I know that they made some. When the 4020s were being phased out is when the need for MFWD became necessary to efficiently get 100+ HP to the ground. My uncle had a 6030 2WD back in the '60s. It was the only one I ever saw. It was an odd looking thing. It had the classic JD lines but it was huge. Back in the '70s most MFWD started at about 150HP. Now you see them on lawnmowers. Times have changed.

There was a 4020 with front wheel assist on ebay a few months ago. It was the only one I have ever seen for sale and up until then I did not know they even made them. Supposedly all original ect. asking price was around 50 grand. I don't think it ever made reserve in the auctions.

Yes they made them and as they were rare they command high prices for poor tractors. They are unusual and I would like to have one:)

What atributes of the 4020 have caused the American farmer's love affair with it. It seems to be "the" classic farm tractor. Also, what model is the closest thing to it that has 4wd.
