I was wondering if anybody else with a 2520/2720 that has the mid mount deck is having problems???

My wife was mowing today and the pin in the clevis at the rear lifting arm on the deck came out again, this is about 4-5 times now. It is at the dealer now. The field rep for JD is going to look at it tomorrow. I hope they do something about it. Called JD's customer care center, filed a complaint was told the field rep is the person to talk to.

Sounds like they are taking care of you,,,,,,,let us know how it turns out?

Sounds like it is time to try a different style of clip on the clevis pin--or maybe just wire tie it in place? Do you know why it is falling out--does the clip rub on something when the deck is raised and lowered--thereby causing it to get pushed out, and the pin to eventually fall out? Maybe just putting the pin in 180 degrees would help so the clip is on the other side?

How could that be such a huge problem ? Drill a hole and wire it or if its threaded use some lok tite. I hope you didn't have to haul the machine to the dealer for this.

The dealer tried the round/circle clips but they also came out. I do not think the pin can be turned around because of hitting the tire.

I have looked, everyone at the dealership has looked and at this time nobody can see why the cotter pin fails which lets the pin fall out.

Here is a picture of the lower clevis, the pin has always came out of the top one.

I'm sorry, but your letting a cotter pin make the decision between keeping the tractor only if you buy an extended warranty, or just completely selling it altogether!? You do realize that there are many other ways to keep that pin in place so that the bolt doesn't fall out right? Does the pin in the bolt just fall out?, or does it snap off? I'm guessing they use a spring type cotter pin with the wave in it so that you can just slide it through the hole and it catches on the bolt right? Have you tried bending the end of the cotter pin so that it isn't able to slide out? or you could try wrapping some wire through the end of the bolt like another poster suggested.

WH401, why should he or anyone have to figure out a way to rig something that is obviosly a poor design OR a "one off" malfunctioning piece. I don't think any of us payed the thousands of dollars we paid in hopes of figuring out ways to make our equipment perform their intended tasks. Why can't folks just help solve problems instead of making judgements concerning another person's experiences or wishes? I can assure you that I would not put up with his situation either. And just suppose that he comes up with a a way to fix it and his way allows it to happen again and it damages the tractor or mower......then what? The warranty is out and he is left paying who knows how much to fix something that should never have needed to be fixed in the first place! :p

First off, if you search TBN you will find that the many other owners of 2320 - 2720 tractors that are equipped with the 62D mower decks aren't having this problem. That itself shows that this problem is unique to only his tractor and just a "poor designed" piece as you may think.

Secondly, if he bends the end of the cotter pin, or attempts at using a threaded bolt in place of the stock bolt, or simply just bends a wire through the end of the bolt hole, how is any of that going to damage the machine? Most likely there is a lot of clearance around that moving part anyway and none of these things would do anything to hurt the tractor. Even if some how they did "damage" the machine, I doubt if it would be more than a slight paint scuff. Possibly it could bind the linkage where the deck lifts up towards the machine, but that would be something you check out before you go mowing for the first time.

Thirdly, I'm offering my opinion because the OP wants to take, and possibly sell, a perfectly good, no problems what so ever tractor, just because of a cotter pin falling loose from the mower deck assembly. I'm in no way trying to be rude or give the impression that I'm trying to talk down to anyone, but a problem such as this is about as minuscule as they get and shouldn't be the basis for such drastic action. Sure the OP, myself, and many others on this site have paid thousands of dollars for these machines, but being that this problem isn't a huge operational nightmare, there is no reason one couldn't improvise to fix it. If the tractor had electrical gremlins from day one, or the engine kept cutting out, then yeah, that would be an issue to trade it for, but not for something like this.

WH401, how do you know what damage may occur if our seemingly good fix fails and the bolt/pin falls out again and thus allows the mower deck to contact the ground and get ripped off the tractor or bent up or rips the linkage off the tractor or just bends the linkage really good or maybe the bolt/pin gets caught by the blades and gets rocketed into or through something or God forbid someone? I am very glad to hear that your intent was not to ridicule him for his unhappiness and its resulting contemplation of selling the tractor or purchasing an extended warranty. I will tell you that if I had his tractor and it had the problem it has which as you say is a one-of-a-kind defect then my dealer would make it like all the other ones or else. I just hate to see folks get slammed because they are disatisfied with a less than perfect product when everyone elses appears perfect. I certainly hope I didn't upset you WH401, I just wanted to make sure that 47chevy didn't get unfairly hammered for his discontent with a purchase that he like the rest of us dreamed about for a very long time only to have the dream shattered due to being unlucky enough to get a "freak" tractor. Stick with it 47chevy and don't back down from the dealer; make him make it right for you! :p

FWIW...I think the easiest fix is a roll pin...Simple, bullet proof, and requires nothing other then a hammer to install. For less the 5 bucks you'll have a fix for a lifetime....
