I bought my JD1070 in June and everytime I engage the rear PTO, the gears make a grinding noise. I've got it idled all the way down. Is it supposed to grind like that? I've operated other tractors and they didn't. That's why I'm asking. I don't want to damge anything.

it's hard to tell what is you're grinding like. some of these tractors have square cut gears and they are bound to make some noise mine does. i think you should run it by the dealer to find out atleast if something should go wrong there is documentation of a potential issue before a problem showed up.

My 790 takes 5-10 seconds to slow enough to slip the gears together.

If I get in to much of a hurry, they'll grind for sure.

My 790 also grinds when engaging the PTO at speed. I usually pull the throttle all the way down and it slips in with just a little grind. I haven't thought of just waiting with the clutch all the way in for 10 seconds. I'll have to try that.

Beings they're straight cut gears, if your gentle w/ the handle you can 'feel' the 2 line up.

You did push the clutch in right ? My 2155 will grind if if the clutch isn't down to the floor.
