47'' snowblower split locking collar

Have any one seen this problem before? I read on another post to check the sprocket for loose set screw which make the sprocket slide on the shaft and cause a misalignment. Well to my surprise I notice that the locking collar inside the small sprocket, was loose and split. It is fairly hard to see or get to it but I manage to get a few pictures. I also notice that one of the two locking collar at each end of the auger was also loose. I bought this blower new last year. What could have cause the collar to split like that? Any idea?

If the locking collar is locked the wrong way thats what will happen. Some times the lip on the bearing will break also.

I'm going to call my dealer tomorrow. I was going to take it a part tomorrow but instead I'm going to bring it to the dealer. It is still on warranty.

The first step was finding the problem and you are headed to the best thing for step two!!!!

welcome to the world economy - imagine hardened wheel studs that look the same but aren't... luckily they could not with stand 85 ft/lbs of torque


at least you caught this be for toooooo much damage occured

while you go thru the process can you get part numbers and $$$ on bolt #10???

have them triple, doubledog check alignment and the torque on all set screws and bolt #10

require the dealer to do the tongue to the cold steel auger shaft test before returning the unit to you

and check the 2nd stage auger for alignment upon repair - front to back movement - as it can walk so far forward it can jam in the yellow case

In the second picture, the collar seems to be install the right way, but can't be sure. I will look at it tomorrow. Can't wait to find out what cause this to break. mfreund, your absolutely right, dealers problem.

tkoza, I will try to get that info. for bolts #10. As for the set screws, that what I was doing went I found the problem. I will follow your advice and mention it to the dealer. I have to call them first to find out if they have the parts before I bring it there, they are located 200 miles from here. But hey, I wanted a jd.

Call my dealer this morning, got an appointment for Friday. He couldn't tell me what would have cause the problem, never seen this before. Will have a better idea once he got it open.

On my 2305 the drive shaft vibrated so bad everything would loosen up especially the sprocket. I tried locktite and that didn't work so i switched all the fasteners to longer grade 8 hex bolts and double-nutted them. This seemed to work the best but I still would check the sprocket every time I would run the blower.

I heard that Deere redesigned the drive-shaft this year to reduce the vibration but I haven't seen the new design yet.

I got so sick of the vibration that I sold the 2305 and bought an X749 -- very smooth and quiet!!!!!

Damaged sprocket on a snowblower is not unusual as the sprocket itself is designed as a backup system when shear pins fail to snap (it happens). I shatter two sprockets every winter on average, that's why I always carry spares. They're relatively cheap ($10-$15 each at machine shops) and quite easy to replace depending on temperature, as it can be tricky to pull off with frozen hands. Most blower manufacturers use standardized sprockets so they're easy to get a hold of.
